Background of the study:
Diaspora remittances have emerged as a crucial financial inflow that supports local business growth in Ihiala. With a significant portion of the population residing abroad, remittances have become an important source of capital for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurial ventures (Chukwu, 2023; Nnadi, 2024). These funds not only supplement household incomes but also foster investment in local businesses, infrastructure, and community development. Recent studies underscore that the infusion of diaspora remittances contributes to increased consumer spending, enhanced business start-ups, and overall economic vibrancy in local markets (Okeke, 2024). However, challenges such as the informal nature of remittance channels, fluctuating currency exchange rates, and regulatory constraints may undermine these positive impacts. This study investigates how diaspora remittances stimulate local business growth in Ihiala, examining the channels through which funds are transferred and utilized. By integrating theoretical frameworks and empirical data, the research aims to delineate the economic mechanisms underlying remittance flows and their implications for local enterprise development, thereby providing valuable insights for both policymakers and business stakeholders.
Statement of the problem:
Although diaspora remittances play a significant role in bolstering local businesses in Ihiala, inconsistencies in remittance channels and regulatory obstacles hinder their full potential. The informal nature of many remittance flows and fluctuating exchange rates lead to uncertainty in capital utilization by local entrepreneurs. Consequently, the sustainable impact of these funds on local business growth remains unclear, necessitating a systematic investigation into the challenges and opportunities presented by diaspora remittances.
Objectives of the study:
1. To assess the impact of diaspora remittances on local business growth in Ihiala.
2. To identify the channels through which remittances are transferred and utilized.
3. To recommend strategies to optimize the economic benefits of remittance flows.
Research questions:
1. How do diaspora remittances influence the growth of local businesses in Ihiala?
2. What are the primary channels for remittance transfer and utilization?
3. How can policy interventions enhance the positive effects of diaspora remittances on local enterprise development?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Diaspora remittances significantly contribute to the growth of local businesses.
2. Informal remittance channels limit the efficient utilization of funds by local entrepreneurs.
3. Policy reforms can improve the transparency and effectiveness of remittance flows.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides insights into how diaspora remittances drive local business growth. The findings will inform policymakers and financial institutions on creating more efficient remittance channels, ultimately fostering sustainable economic development in Ihiala.
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to investigating the impact of diaspora remittances on local business growth in Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State and does not extend to remittance impacts in other regions or sectors.
Definitions of terms:
• Diaspora remittances: Funds sent by citizens living abroad to their home country.
• Local business growth: The expansion and increased profitability of locally based enterprises.
• Remittance channels: The formal and informal pathways through which funds are transferred from abroad.
