Background of the study
Pesticide use is a common agricultural practice intended to enhance crop productivity by controlling pests. However, in Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, the extensive use of chemical pesticides has raised concerns about soil health and ecosystem sustainability (Oluwaseun, 2023). This study examines the impact of pesticide application on soil microbial diversity, nutrient balance, and overall soil fertility. Evidence suggests that long-term pesticide use can alter soil chemical properties and reduce beneficial microbial populations, thereby impairing soil structure and productivity (Babatunde, 2024). The research investigates the extent to which different types of pesticides affect soil enzymatic activities and organic matter content. Recent advances in soil science highlight the potential for alternative pest management strategies that are less disruptive to soil ecosystems (Tunde, 2023). By combining laboratory analyses with field surveys, the study aims to provide a robust evaluation of the environmental trade-offs associated with pesticide use, ultimately informing sustainable agricultural practices.
Statement of the problem
In Ifo, the pervasive use of chemical pesticides in agriculture has led to concerns over declining soil health. This practice has been linked to reduced microbial activity, nutrient imbalances, and diminished soil fertility. Such degradation negatively impacts crop yields and long-term agricultural sustainability. The lack of localized studies on the soil impacts of pesticide use hinders the development of alternative pest management strategies. Addressing these issues is critical to ensuring sustainable agricultural productivity and environmental conservation (Oluwaseun, 2023; Babatunde, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
• To assess the impact of pesticide use on soil chemical and biological properties.
• To evaluate changes in soil fertility and microbial diversity associated with pesticide application.
• To propose alternative pest management strategies that safeguard soil health.
Research questions:
• How does pesticide use affect soil microbial diversity and nutrient balance in Ifo?
• What are the long-term impacts of pesticide application on soil fertility?
• Which alternative pest management strategies can maintain crop productivity while protecting soil health?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Extensive pesticide use significantly reduces soil microbial diversity.
• H2: Pesticide application is inversely related to soil fertility parameters.
• H3: Adoption of alternative pest management practices improves soil health.
Significance of the study
This study is significant for its focus on the environmental impacts of pesticide use on soil health. The findings will inform sustainable agricultural practices, benefiting farmers, policymakers, and environmental conservation efforts by promoting methods that enhance soil quality and long-term productivity (Tunde, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the impact of pesticide use on soil health in Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State.
Definitions of terms:
• Pesticides: Chemical substances used to control pests in agriculture.
• Soil Health: The state of soil in terms of its biological, chemical, and physical properties.
• Microbial Diversity: The variety and abundance of microorganisms present in the soil.
