Background of the study

Bush meat consumption is a culturally significant practice in many regions but poses serious challenges to wildlife conservation. In Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, the high demand for bush meat has contributed to unsustainable hunting and wildlife depletion (Akin, 2023). This study appraises the relationship between bush meat consumption and conservation efforts, exploring the socio-cultural drivers behind this practice and its ecological consequences. The unsustainable harvesting of wild animals not only threatens biodiversity but also disrupts ecosystem balance. Emerging research emphasizes the need for conservation strategies that balance cultural practices with sustainable resource use (Ejiro, 2024). Through field surveys, interviews, and ecological assessments, this study investigates the impact of bush meat demand on local wildlife populations. The research aims to identify viable alternatives and conservation measures that could reconcile traditional practices with the need for biodiversity protection. By contextualizing local consumption patterns within broader conservation challenges, the study provides valuable insights for policymakers and conservationists seeking to implement effective wildlife management strategies (Obiora, 2023).

Statement of the problem

The unsustainable consumption of bush meat in Owo has led to a decline in wildlife populations and biodiversity loss. Cultural practices and economic incentives drive overexploitation, undermining conservation efforts. Despite awareness of these issues, regulatory measures and alternative protein sources remain limited. This imbalance between traditional practices and conservation needs poses a serious threat to local ecosystems. A comprehensive investigation is necessary to address these challenges and propose integrated solutions that promote sustainable wildlife management (Akin, 2023; Ejiro, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

• To assess the impact of bush meat consumption on wildlife populations in Owo.

• To analyze the socio-cultural factors driving bush meat demand.

• To recommend sustainable conservation strategies that balance cultural practices with wildlife protection.

Research questions:

• What is the effect of bush meat consumption on local wildlife populations?

• Which socio-cultural factors influence the demand for bush meat in Owo?

• What strategies can promote sustainable wildlife conservation?

Research Hypotheses:

• H1: High levels of bush meat consumption are significantly associated with wildlife population declines.

• H2: Socio-cultural practices are a primary driver of bush meat demand.

• H3: Introducing alternative protein sources can reduce the pressure on wildlife resources.

Significance of the study

This study provides essential insights into the link between bush meat consumption and wildlife conservation, offering guidance for sustainable resource management. Its recommendations will inform policymakers, conservationists, and community leaders in balancing cultural traditions with biodiversity preservation (Obiora, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:

This study is limited to evaluating bush meat consumption and its impact on wildlife conservation in Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State.

Definitions of terms:

• Bush Meat Consumption: The hunting and consumption of wild animals for food.

• Wildlife Conservation: The practice of protecting animal species and their habitats.

• Biodiversity: The variety of living species within an ecosystem.
