Background of the study

Water scarcity is a critical issue affecting many regions, with profound socio-economic ramifications. In Ikirun Local Government Area, Osun State, recurring droughts, inefficient water management, and population pressures have converged to create a severe water deficit (Balogun, 2023). This study explores the causes and consequences of water scarcity, focusing on how inadequate water supply impacts agriculture, health, and local economies. Socio-economic activities in Ikirun are increasingly vulnerable to fluctuations in water availability, leading to reduced agricultural productivity and compromised livelihoods (Afolabi, 2024). Recent investigations indicate that improved water resource management, community participation, and innovative water conservation techniques can alleviate these challenges (Olatunde, 2023). The study utilizes both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze water distribution systems, consumption patterns, and community coping mechanisms. By synthesizing local data and global best practices, the research aims to offer targeted recommendations for sustainable water management. In doing so, it addresses the urgent need for integrated water policies that balance human, agricultural, and ecological requirements, thereby fostering long-term socio-economic resilience.

Statement of the problem

Ikirun is facing acute water scarcity that negatively impacts its socio-economic fabric. The insufficient and unreliable water supply has disrupted agricultural production, hindered industrial activities, and affected public health. These challenges are compounded by inadequate infrastructure and poor water management practices. The resulting water stress undermines local economic development and quality of life. There is an urgent need to understand the underlying causes and devise strategies to enhance water availability and management in the area (Balogun, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

• To assess the extent and causes of water scarcity in Ikirun.

• To evaluate the socio-economic impacts of water scarcity on the community.

• To recommend sustainable water management and conservation strategies.

Research questions:

• What are the main factors contributing to water scarcity in Ikirun?

• How does water scarcity affect local socio-economic activities?

• Which water management strategies can effectively alleviate water scarcity?

Research Hypotheses:

• H1: Inadequate water management significantly contributes to water scarcity in Ikirun.

• H2: Water scarcity is directly linked to declining agricultural productivity and economic hardship.

• H3: Implementation of conservation techniques will improve water availability.

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it addresses the critical issue of water scarcity in Ikirun, providing essential insights for policymakers and community leaders. Its findings will contribute to developing effective water management strategies that enhance socio-economic resilience and improve public health (Olatunde, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:

This study is limited to the examination of water scarcity and its socio-economic effects in Ikirun Local Government Area, Osun State.

Definitions of terms:

• Water Scarcity: The lack of sufficient available water resources to meet demand.

• Socio-economic Effects: The impacts of environmental issues on social and economic conditions.

• Water Management: Strategies and practices used to control water resources effectively
