Background of the Study

Electoral malpractice undermines the foundations of grassroots democracy by compromising the integrity of the electoral process and eroding public trust (Okeke, 2023). In Awka South, irregularities such as voter intimidation, ballot stuffing, and result manipulation have raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of local elections (Ibrahim, 2024). These malpractices not only distort democratic representation but also hinder the development of effective governance and community participation (Chukwu, 2023). This study critically appraises the various forms of electoral malpractice in Awka South, examining their causes, manifestations, and repercussions on grassroots democracy. It explores the role of systemic corruption and external influences in compromising electoral integrity, aiming to propose measures that strengthen transparency and accountability at the local level (Adeyemi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Awka South Local Government Area has experienced notable instances of electoral malpractice, including voter intimidation and result manipulation, which compromise the democratic process (Ibrahim, 2024). These irregularities have led to public disillusionment and weakened trust in local governance (Okeke, 2023). This study seeks to identify the extent and impact of electoral malpractice on grassroots democracy and to propose strategies to ensure transparent and fair electoral practices (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To appraise the forms and extent of electoral malpractice in Awka South.

2. To assess the impact of these malpractices on grassroots democracy.

3. To recommend measures for enhancing electoral transparency and integrity.

Research Questions:

1. What forms of electoral malpractice are prevalent in Awka South?

2. How do these malpractices affect grassroots democratic processes?

3. What measures can improve the integrity of electoral practices?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Electoral malpractice significantly undermines grassroots democracy.

2. There is a negative relationship between electoral irregularities and public trust.

3. Strengthening regulatory frameworks improves electoral integrity.

Significance of the Study

This study provides a critical analysis of electoral malpractice and its implications for grassroots democracy in Awka South. The insights gained are intended to guide reforms in electoral processes, fostering greater transparency and public confidence in democratic governance (Ibrahim, 2024; Okeke, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to appraising electoral malpractice and its implications on grassroots democracy in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State.
