Background of the Study
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have emerged as key players in the realm of forest conservation, particularly in areas where governmental resources are limited (Adeyemi, 2023). In Yenagoa, NGOs actively engage in activities such as reforestation, environmental education, and sustainable resource management to combat deforestation and promote biodiversity conservation (Ibrahim, 2024). Their grassroots approach often complements governmental efforts, mobilizing local communities and advocating for sustainable land use practices. Despite their contributions, NGOs face challenges including limited funding, political interference, and low community participation (Chukwu, 2023). This study appraises the role of NGOs in forest conservation by evaluating their strategies, achievements, and constraints, and it explores how enhanced collaboration with government agencies could lead to more effective conservation outcomes (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Forest conservation in Yenagoa faces persistent challenges despite the involvement of NGOs, including funding constraints, inadequate community participation, and policy gaps (Ibrahim, 2024). The fragmented efforts between NGOs and government agencies have resulted in suboptimal conservation outcomes (Adeyemi, 2023). This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of NGO interventions in forest conservation, identify the barriers to success, and propose strategies for better collaboration and resource mobilization (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the role of NGOs in forest conservation.
2. To assess the challenges faced by NGOs in implementing conservation projects.
3. To recommend strategies for improving NGO-government collaboration in forest conservation.
Research Questions:
1. What roles do NGOs play in forest conservation in Yenagoa?
2. What challenges hinder effective forest conservation by NGOs?
3. How can NGO and government collaboration be improved for better conservation outcomes?
Research Hypotheses:
1. NGOs significantly contribute to forest conservation efforts.
2. Funding and resource constraints negatively affect NGO performance.
3. Improved collaboration between NGOs and government enhances conservation outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study provides insights into the critical role of NGOs in forest conservation in Yenagoa, offering recommendations to enhance their effectiveness. The findings will support policy adjustments and improved resource allocation for sustainable forest management (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to appraising the role of non-governmental organizations in forest conservation in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Independent organizations focused on social and environmental issues.
2. Forest Conservation: The sustainable management and protection of forest resources.
3. Reforestation: The process of replanting trees in deforested areas.
