Background of the Study
Climate-induced migration is reshaping urban landscapes, significantly affecting housing and land tenure systems in cities like Benin City (Adeyemi, 2023). Changes in climate patterns force communities to relocate, leading to increased pressure on urban housing markets and altering traditional land tenure arrangements (Ibrahim, 2024). The influx of migrants often results in the proliferation of informal settlements and conflicts over land ownership, as existing legal frameworks struggle to accommodate rapid demographic changes (Okeke, 2023). This study examines how climate-induced migration influences housing availability and land tenure dynamics, assessing the socio-economic challenges that arise from these shifts. It further evaluates policy responses and sustainable housing strategies aimed at mitigating the adverse impacts of climate migration (Chukwu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Benin City is facing housing shortages and land tenure conflicts due to the rapid influx of climate-induced migrants, which strain existing urban infrastructure (Ibrahim, 2024). The disruption of traditional land ownership systems has resulted in informal settlements and heightened socio-economic tensions (Okeke, 2023). This study seeks to understand the impact of climate-induced migration on housing and land tenure, addressing the gaps in policy and planning needed to manage these challenges effectively (Adeyemi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the impact of climate-induced migration on housing in Benin City.
2. To examine changes in land tenure systems due to migration.
3. To propose policy recommendations for sustainable urban development.
Research Questions:
1. How does climate-induced migration affect housing availability in Benin City?
2. What changes occur in land tenure systems due to migration?
3. What policies can mitigate the challenges arising from climate-induced migration?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Climate-induced migration significantly impacts housing demand.
2. Land tenure systems are disrupted by the influx of migrants.
3. Effective urban policies can alleviate housing and tenure conflicts.
Significance of the Study
This study offers valuable insights into the effects of climate-induced migration on housing and land tenure in Benin City, guiding policymakers in developing sustainable urban planning strategies. The findings will help address housing shortages and improve land tenure systems amidst rapid urbanization (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of climate-induced migration on housing and land tenure in Benin City, Edo State.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Climate-Induced Migration: Movement of populations due to climate change impacts.
2. Housing Availability: The accessibility and adequacy of living accommodations.
3. Land Tenure: The legal regime in which land is owned and occupied.
