Background of the Study:
Political think tanks have emerged as influential institutions that provide research, analysis, and policy recommendations aimed at improving governance. In Epe, these organizations play a critical role in informing local government policies and bridging the gap between academic research and political practice (Balogun, 2023). Through evidence-based analysis, think tanks help policymakers understand complex socio-economic issues and devise strategies that are both innovative and practical (Olaoye, 2024). Their contributions have been linked to enhanced policy formulation, improved public service delivery, and more accountable governance (Adeniyi, 2025). Despite their potential, challenges such as funding constraints and political interference can limit their impact. This study evaluates how political think tanks in Epe influence local government policies, focusing on the mechanisms through which research informs practice and the overall effect on policy outcomes (Olaoye, 2024).

Statement of the Problem:
Although political think tanks in Epe offer valuable insights, their impact on local government policy-making is often constrained by limited resources and political pressures. These challenges hinder the full utilization of their research outputs in the policy formulation process. This study seeks to assess the extent of their influence and identify barriers to effective policy engagement (Adeniyi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To examine the contributions of political think tanks to local policy-making in Epe.
  • To assess the mechanisms through which research influences government decisions.
  • To recommend strategies to strengthen the role of think tanks in policy formulation.

Research Questions:

  • How do political think tanks influence policy-making in Epe?
  • What challenges limit their effectiveness in shaping local government policies?
  • What measures can enhance the integration of think tank research into policy decisions?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Political think tanks have a positive influence on local policy formulation.
  • H2: Funding constraints and political pressures negatively affect their effectiveness.
  • H3: Strengthening institutional linkages can improve the impact of think tanks.

Significance of the Study:
This study highlights the critical role of political think tanks in shaping local government policies in Epe. It provides valuable insights for enhancing evidence-based governance and bridging research with practice (Olaoye, 2024; Adeniyi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the role of political think tanks in shaping policies within Epe Local Government Area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Political Think Tanks: Research organizations that analyze public policy issues and provide recommendations.
  • Policy Formulation: The process of developing strategies and decisions for governance.
  • Evidence-Based Governance: The practice of making policy decisions based on empirical research.
