Background of the Study
Bushfires have emerged as a recurring hazard, particularly in regions with dense vegetation and unpredictable climatic conditions (Okoro, 2023). In Ikom, government intervention is crucial in mitigating the destructive impacts of bushfires on both human settlements and natural ecosystems. Strategies such as early warning systems, organized firefighting, and community education have been implemented; however, their effectiveness remains under scrutiny (Chukwu, 2024). This study critically appraises these interventions by exploring the coordination between governmental agencies and local communities. It also examines the integration of traditional knowledge with modern fire management techniques. By evaluating these diverse approaches, the study aims to determine how policy gaps and resource constraints affect the overall efficiency of bushfire control efforts (Ibrahim, 2023). The research further investigates public-private partnerships and their potential to enhance preparedness and reduce disaster-related losses (Bamidele, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Ikom Local Government Area is plagued by recurrent bushfires that threaten lives, property, and environmental integrity despite existing government interventions (Okoro, 2023). Inadequate resource allocation, inconsistent policy enforcement, and low community engagement contribute to persistent vulnerabilities. This study seeks to identify shortcomings in current strategies, assess the effectiveness of government interventions, and propose solutions to strengthen bushfire management practices (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of government interventions in controlling bushfires.
2. To identify gaps in current bushfire management strategies.
3. To recommend improvements for policy and practice in bushfire control.
Research Questions:
1. What are the current government strategies for bushfire control in Ikom?
2. How effective are these interventions in mitigating bushfire occurrences?
3. What improvements can be made to enhance bushfire management?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Government interventions significantly reduce the frequency of bushfires.
2. There is a positive relationship between resource allocation and bushfire management effectiveness.
3. Improved community engagement enhances the success of bushfire control strategies.
Significance of the Study
This study offers valuable insights into the effectiveness of government interventions in bushfire management in Ikom, highlighting the need for improved resource allocation and community involvement. The research findings are intended to support policy formulation and enhance operational strategies for bushfire control, ensuring environmental sustainability and public safety (Okoro, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating government interventions in controlling bushfires in Ikom Local Government Area, excluding the analysis of interventions in other regions.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Bushfires: Uncontrolled fires that occur in areas of combustible vegetation.
2. Government Intervention: Actions taken by the state to prevent or mitigate natural disasters.
3. Fire Management: Strategies and practices implemented to prevent, control, and mitigate fire hazards.
