Background of the Study:
Internal democracy within political parties is fundamental to ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective governance at the local level. In Ovia North-East, the internal dynamics of political parties have increasingly become a focal point, as members demand more participatory decision-making processes (Ighodalo, 2024). Evidence suggests that where internal party democracy is robust, local governance tends to be more responsive and inclusive (Obi, 2023). Conversely, autocratic practices within party structures often result in nepotism, factionalism, and poor policy implementation. Historical analyses indicate that the internal organization of political parties can significantly influence the quality of local leadership and service delivery (Akintayo, 2023). In the context of Ovia North-East, an examination of party internal democracy is crucial, as it impacts candidate selection, policy formulation, and ultimately, governance outcomes. This study critically assesses the level of internal democracy in political parties and explores its correlation with effective local governance practices (Oluwole, 2024).

Statement of the Problem:
A lack of internal democracy within political parties in Ovia North-East has led to centralized decision-making and a disconnect between party leadership and grassroots members. This centralization adversely affects policy formulation and local governance, contributing to inefficiencies and reduced public trust (Akintayo, 2023). The study aims to explore how internal party dynamics impede or promote effective local governance (Ighodalo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the state of internal democracy within political parties in Ovia North-East.
  • To analyze the impact of internal party dynamics on local governance.
  • To recommend measures for improving internal democratic practices.

Research Questions:

  • What is the level of internal democracy within political parties in Ovia North-East?
  • How does internal party governance affect local administrative performance?
  • What reforms can enhance internal democratic processes in political parties?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Strong internal party democracy is positively correlated with effective local governance.
  • H2: Centralized decision-making within parties negatively affects service delivery.
  • H3: Implementing internal reforms will lead to improved governance outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
This study underscores the critical role of internal party democracy in shaping local governance quality. It offers practical recommendations to reform internal structures, thereby enhancing transparency and accountability in local administration (Oluwole, 2024; Akintayo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the internal democratic processes of political parties and their impact on local governance in Ovia North-East Local Government Area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Internal Democracy: The participatory and transparent decision-making processes within a political party.
  • Local Governance: The system by which local administrative bodies manage community affairs.
  • Political Party: An organized group seeking to attain and exercise political power.
