Background of the Study:
Youth political apathy is increasingly recognized as a barrier to effective local governance and sustainable development. In Ika South, there is growing concern over the disengagement of young citizens from political processes, which adversely affects community development and policy responsiveness (Eghosa, 2023). This trend has been attributed to a perceived disconnect between political institutions and the aspirations of the younger generation (Akinola, 2024). The lack of youth participation has implications for accountability and transparency in local government operations. Recent studies emphasize that political apathy among youth not only diminishes innovative contributions to governance but also perpetuates a cycle of neglect and ineffective policymaking (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, socio-economic factors, educational gaps, and historical disenfranchisement further exacerbate this apathy (Obi, 2025). This research examines the causes and consequences of youth political apathy in Ika South and explores strategies for revitalizing youth involvement in local governance, thereby contributing to more dynamic and inclusive development policies (Chukwu, 2024).

Statement of the Problem:
The persistent political apathy among the youth in Ika South undermines local government development by limiting fresh ideas and accountability in decision-making processes. This disengagement has resulted in reduced civic participation and a lack of innovative solutions to community challenges (Akinola, 2024). The study seeks to identify the factors contributing to this apathy and its impact on effective governance (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To investigate the causes of youth political apathy in Ika South.
  • To assess the impact of this apathy on local government development.
  • To propose measures to enhance youth engagement in local governance.

Research Questions:

  • What factors contribute to youth political apathy in Ika South?
  • How does youth apathy affect the development initiatives of the local government?
  • What strategies can be implemented to improve youth participation in local politics?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Socio-economic challenges significantly contribute to youth political apathy.
  • H2: There is a negative relationship between youth apathy and local government development.
  • H3: Community-based programs can effectively enhance youth political engagement.

Significance of the Study:
The study offers insights into the detrimental effects of youth political apathy on local governance and development. It provides recommendations for fostering active youth participation to ensure more responsive and accountable local government operations (Eghosa, 2023; Obi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to examining the phenomenon of youth political apathy and its effects on local government development within Ika South Local Government Area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Political Apathy: A lack of interest or concern among citizens regarding political processes.
  • Local Government Development: The improvement of community services and infrastructure managed by local authorities.
  • Youth Engagement: The active participation of young individuals in political and civic activities.
