Background of the study:
Local weaving industries are integral to the cultural and economic identity of many communities, providing both employment and a medium for artistic expression. In Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, traditional weaving has been a long-standing practice that supports local economies and preserves cultural heritage (Adesola, 2023). Weaving not only contributes to household incomes through the production of textiles and handicrafts but also attracts tourism and fosters community pride (Babatunde, 2024). Despite its cultural significance, the sustainability of local weaving is threatened by factors such as competition from mass-produced textiles, limited access to modern technology, and a declining number of skilled artisans (Folashade, 2025). This appraisal investigates the current state of the weaving industry, assessing both its economic contributions and the challenges it faces. Emphasis is placed on identifying strategies that can enhance sustainability, including technological integration, capacity building, and market diversification (Adesola, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
The local weaving industry in Iseyin faces significant sustainability challenges due to competition, technological lag, and a diminishing artisan base. These issues threaten the economic viability and cultural preservation of weaving traditions, necessitating urgent strategic interventions (Babatunde, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the economic contributions of local weaving industries.
  2. To identify challenges affecting the sustainability of weaving practices.
  3. To recommend strategies for modernizing and preserving the industry.

Research questions:

  1. What is the economic impact of local weaving on Iseyin’s economy?
  2. What are the primary sustainability challenges facing the weaving industry?
  3. How can technological and market interventions improve the sustainability of local weaving?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Local weaving significantly contributes to the local economy.
  2. Technological limitations negatively affect the sustainability of weaving practices.
  3. Market diversification strategies can enhance the long-term viability of the weaving industry.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it offers insights into sustaining a traditional industry in the face of modernization pressures, guiding policymakers and stakeholders in implementing strategies that preserve cultural heritage while boosting economic growth (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses on local weaving industries in Iseyin Local Government Area and does not extend to other artisanal sectors or regions. Limitations include data collection challenges and the influence of global textile market trends.

Definitions of terms:

  • Local weaving: Traditional textile production practices unique to a specific cultural context.
  • Sustainability: The capacity to maintain economic, social, and environmental resources over time.
  • Artisans: Skilled craftspersons engaged in traditional production techniques.
