Background of the study:
Digital entrepreneurship is rapidly transforming traditional economic landscapes by leveraging technology to create innovative business models. In Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, the youth have increasingly embraced digital platforms to initiate entrepreneurial ventures, ranging from e-commerce to tech start-ups (Akpan, 2023). This trend is driven by improved internet penetration, affordable technology, and a growing awareness of the benefits of digital innovation. Digital entrepreneurship not only offers an alternative to conventional employment but also fosters creativity, job creation, and economic diversification (Okoro, 2024). However, despite these opportunities, challenges such as inadequate digital infrastructure, limited access to capital, and regulatory uncertainties persist (Etim, 2025). This study investigates the extent and impact of youth involvement in digital entrepreneurship, examining how these ventures contribute to local economic development while also identifying barriers that need to be addressed for sustainable growth (Akpan, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Although digital entrepreneurship presents promising opportunities for youth in Uyo, many young entrepreneurs struggle with infrastructural deficits, lack of funding, and unclear regulatory frameworks. These challenges limit the scalability and sustainability of digital ventures, necessitating a closer investigation into the obstacles and potential solutions (Okoro, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the level of youth involvement in digital entrepreneurship.
  2. To examine the economic contributions of digital start-ups in Uyo.
  3. To identify challenges and recommend strategies for growth.

Research questions:

  1. How significant is youth participation in digital entrepreneurship in Uyo?
  2. What economic impacts do digital ventures have on local development?
  3. What factors hinder the growth of digital start-ups in the region?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Youth involvement in digital entrepreneurship significantly enhances local economic development.
  2. There is a positive correlation between digital innovation and job creation.
  3. Infrastructural challenges and funding deficits negatively impact digital start-up sustainability.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the role of digital entrepreneurship in empowering youth and stimulating local economies, guiding policymakers and investors in creating an enabling environment for technological innovation (Akanbi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to youth involvement in digital entrepreneurship in Uyo Local Government Area and does not cover other regions or traditional entrepreneurial activities. Limitations include variations in digital literacy and resource accessibility.

Definitions of terms:

  • Digital entrepreneurship: The process of creating and managing business ventures using digital technologies.
  • Start-up: A newly established business, often characterized by innovation and high growth potential.
  • Digital infrastructure: The foundational technology systems that support digital communication and business operations.
