Background of the study:
Women in fishing communities have traditionally played multifaceted roles that extend beyond primary fishing activities. In Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, women contribute significantly to the economic sustenance of their communities through fish processing, marketing, and ancillary services (Ekanem, 2023). Their involvement not only generates income but also supports household economies and enhances community resilience. Recent studies underscore the critical importance of gender-inclusive development policies that recognize the economic contributions of women in traditionally male-dominated sectors (Okon, 2024). Despite these contributions, women often face systemic challenges including limited access to credit, training, and market opportunities, which constrain their potential (Udo, 2025). This study examines the economic roles of women in Andoni fishing communities, evaluating how their participation in various economic activities contributes to local development while identifying barriers that hinder further empowerment (Ekanem, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Women in Andoni fishing communities face significant challenges in accessing resources and market opportunities, which restrict their economic potential despite their substantial contributions. This study aims to highlight these challenges and identify strategies to enhance women’s economic empowerment in the sector (Okon, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the economic contributions of women in fishing communities.
  2. To identify the challenges that hinder women’s participation in economic activities.
  3. To propose interventions for enhancing women’s economic empowerment.

Research questions:

  1. What are the primary economic roles of women in Andoni fishing communities?
  2. What challenges limit their economic participation?
  3. Which interventions can most effectively empower women in this context?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Women’s economic contributions significantly enhance community livelihoods.
  2. Systemic barriers negatively affect women’s economic empowerment.
  3. Targeted interventions can improve women’s participation in economic activities.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant because it underscores the vital role of women in the economic fabric of fishing communities, offering insights for policies aimed at reducing gender disparities and fostering inclusive economic growth (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to the economic roles of women in fishing communities in Andoni Local Government Area. It does not address broader gender issues or economic roles in non-fishing sectors. Data constraints and cultural factors may limit the generalizability of the findings.

Definitions of terms:

  • Economic roles: The functions and contributions individuals make toward economic activities.
  • Fishing communities: Communities that rely primarily on fishing for their livelihoods.
  • Empowerment: The process of increasing the capacity of individuals to make choices and transform those choices into desired actions and outcomes.
