Background of the study:
Indigenous land tenure systems are fundamental to the socio-economic fabric of many rural communities, particularly in regions where traditional practices influence resource allocation and agricultural productivity. In Yakurr Local Government Area, Cross River State, customary landholding patterns continue to govern access to fertile land and the management of agricultural resources (Udo, 2023). These traditional systems, deeply embedded in cultural norms, affect the decision-making processes of farmers, impacting crop choices, investment in technology, and overall productivity. Recent research highlights both the strengths and limitations of indigenous tenure arrangements in fostering sustainable agriculture (Ifeanyi, 2024). While these systems promote community cohesion and collective resource management, they may also hinder the adoption of modern farming practices due to rigid customs and conflicts over land rights (Okon, 2025). This study examines the interplay between indigenous land tenure and agricultural productivity, focusing on how traditional practices can be integrated with contemporary agricultural innovations to enhance food security and rural livelihoods (Udo, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Indigenous land tenure systems in Yakurr often conflict with modern agricultural demands, leading to inefficiencies in land use and reduced productivity. These conflicts, compounded by disputes over land rights, hinder the adoption of improved farming practices and sustainable resource management (Ifeanyi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of indigenous land tenure on agricultural productivity.
  2. To analyze the barriers to modern farming within traditional systems.
  3. To suggest integrative approaches for sustainable agricultural development.

Research questions:

  1. How do indigenous land tenure practices affect land use efficiency?
  2. What are the main challenges in integrating modern farming practices with traditional systems?
  3. Which strategies can enhance agricultural productivity under indigenous tenure regimes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Indigenous tenure systems have a significant influence on land use efficiency.
  2. There is a negative relationship between rigid traditional practices and the adoption of modern farming techniques.
  3. Integrative land management approaches improve agricultural productivity.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it addresses the critical balance between traditional land rights and modern agricultural practices, offering insights for policymakers and community leaders to promote sustainable rural development (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the indigenous land tenure systems and their effects on agricultural productivity in Yakurr Local Government Area. Broader national land policies and urban agricultural practices are not considered.

Definitions of terms:

  • Indigenous land tenure: Traditional systems governing land ownership and usage based on customary practices.
  • Agricultural productivity: The efficiency with which crops are produced relative to inputs.
  • Sustainable development: Development that meets present needs without compromising future generations.
