Background of the study
Bush burning, often employed as a traditional method for land clearing and agricultural renewal, has raised serious concerns regarding its long-term effects on soil quality and agricultural productivity. In Afikpo North Local Government Area, bush burning is a common practice used to manage crop residues and prepare land for new cultivation cycles. However, recent observations indicate that repeated burning can lead to the loss of soil nutrients, reduced organic matter, and long-term soil degradation (Nnamdi, 2023). These changes directly affect crop yields and compromise food security among local farmers (Chukwuemeka, 2024). Moreover, bush burning contributes to air pollution and climate variability, further complicating agricultural outcomes (Obi, 2025). Despite its traditional roots, the detrimental impacts of bush burning are becoming increasingly apparent. This study seeks to explore the relationship between bush burning practices and agricultural productivity, highlighting both the short-term benefits and long-term environmental costs. The research will analyze current practices, assess their impacts on soil health, and explore sustainable alternatives that can improve productivity while protecting the environment (Amarachi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Bush burning in Afikpo North has led to observable declines in soil fertility and agricultural productivity. The practice, though traditionally accepted, is causing long-term environmental degradation, reducing crop yields and threatening food security. The current agricultural practices need urgent review to balance short-term benefits with sustainable long-term outcomes (Chidiebere, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  • To examine the effects of bush burning on soil fertility.
  • To evaluate its impact on agricultural productivity.
  • To recommend sustainable land management alternatives.

Research questions

  • What are the effects of bush burning on soil nutrient levels?
  • How does bush burning affect crop productivity in Afikpo North?
  • What sustainable practices can replace bush burning for land preparation?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Bush burning significantly reduces soil fertility over time.
  • H2: Reduced soil fertility due to bush burning negatively affects crop yields.
  • H3: Sustainable land management practices can improve agricultural productivity.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it elucidates the environmental and economic impacts of bush burning on agriculture. The findings will help shape policies for sustainable land management and ensure long-term food security for local communities.

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the investigation of the effects of bush burning on agricultural productivity in Afikpo North Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

Definitions of terms

  • Bush burning: The practice of setting fire to vegetation to clear land.
  • Soil fertility: The capacity of soil to provide essential nutrients for plant growth.
  • Agricultural productivity: The output of agricultural products relative to the inputs used.
