Background of the study
Wetlands are critical ecosystems that provide essential services such as water purification, flood control, and habitat for diverse species. In Ughelli North Local Government Area, extensive wetland degradation has been observed, primarily due to human activities including agriculture, industrial development, and unsustainable land use practices (Ibe, 2023). The loss of wetland areas not only disrupts ecological balance but also affects the biodiversity that depends on these habitats. Recent studies have highlighted that degraded wetlands contribute to the loss of native species and the decline of ecological functions (Okafor, 2024). The degradation process has been exacerbated by inadequate policy enforcement and a lack of community awareness regarding the ecological importance of wetlands (Adesanya, 2025). This research investigates the extent of wetland degradation and its implications for biodiversity. It also explores the potential for restoration and conservation strategies that could mitigate these adverse impacts, ensuring that these critical ecosystems are preserved for future generations (Chinelo, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Ughelli North is facing significant wetland degradation, which has led to a decline in biodiversity and the loss of vital ecosystem services. Unsustainable land use practices and inadequate conservation measures have accelerated this degradation, threatening local wildlife and ecological stability. This situation calls for urgent intervention to restore and protect wetland ecosystems (Ifeanyi, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  • To assess the extent of wetland degradation in Ughelli North.
  • To evaluate the impact of degradation on local biodiversity.
  • To propose conservation strategies for wetland restoration.

Research questions

  • What is the current status of wetlands in Ughelli North?
  • How has wetland degradation affected biodiversity in the area?
  • What conservation strategies can effectively restore degraded wetlands?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Wetland degradation significantly reduces local biodiversity.
  • H2: Unsustainable land use practices are the primary cause of wetland loss.
  • H3: Implementing targeted conservation strategies will restore wetland functions.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed analysis of wetland degradation and its impacts on biodiversity. The findings will inform conservation policies and restoration efforts, aiding local authorities and communities in preserving these vital ecosystems.

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the assessment of wetland degradation and its implications for biodiversity in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State.

Definitions of terms

  • Wetland degradation: The decline in the quality and function of wetland ecosystems.
  • Biodiversity: The variety of living organisms within an ecosystem.
  • Conservation strategies: Measures aimed at preserving and restoring natural habitats.
