Background of the study
Agricultural expansion is increasingly encroaching upon forest reserves, leading to significant environmental and ecological concerns. In Ife East Local Government Area, the conversion of forest land for farming purposes has disrupted biodiversity and altered local ecosystems (Ajayi, 2023). As traditional agricultural practices intensify to meet growing food demands, the encroachment into forest reserves not only reduces habitat areas but also undermines ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and water regulation (Ogun, 2024). Recent studies indicate that deforestation for agriculture results in soil degradation, loss of wildlife, and increased greenhouse gas emissions, which collectively exacerbate climate change (Bello, 2025). Moreover, the displacement of indigenous species and traditional forest-dependent communities further complicates the socio-economic dynamics in the region. The interplay between agricultural productivity and forest conservation is at the heart of sustainable development debates. This study seeks to explore the impacts of agricultural expansion on forest reserves in Ife East, aiming to provide a balanced perspective that considers both economic imperatives and environmental sustainability (Olalekan, 2023).
Statement of the problem
The rapid expansion of agricultural activities in Ife East has resulted in the degradation of forest reserves, leading to biodiversity loss and environmental imbalance. This encroachment threatens the ecological integrity of forest ecosystems and undermines the services they provide. Despite the economic benefits of increased agricultural production, the environmental costs have not been adequately addressed, necessitating a re-evaluation of land use policies and conservation strategies (Damilola, 2024).
