Background of the study
Political mentorship programs have emerged as an innovative approach to nurturing leadership succession and capacity building within local government structures. In the Awka North Local Government Area, these programs aim to develop future political leaders by providing guidance, skills training, and experiential learning opportunities. Such initiatives facilitate the transfer of institutional knowledge and promote ethical leadership practices, contributing to a more sustainable political environment (Chukwu, 2023). Mentorship programs are designed to bridge the gap between experienced policymakers and emerging leaders, thereby enhancing leadership continuity and administrative effectiveness (Okafor, 2024). This study examines the impact of political mentorship programs on leadership succession, exploring how these initiatives influence the preparedness of future leaders and the overall quality of governance. By analyzing program structures, participant outcomes, and institutional support mechanisms, the research aims to provide insights into best practices for fostering leadership development in local government (Emeka, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the growing implementation of political mentorship programs, there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in ensuring smooth leadership succession in the Awka North Local Government Area. Challenges such as inadequate program structure, lack of sustained institutional support, and limited participation hinder the intended benefits of these initiatives (Nwachukwu, 2023). The uncertainty surrounding the impact of mentorship on leadership continuity raises concerns about the long-term sustainability of local governance. This study seeks to address these gaps by systematically investigating how political mentorship programs influence leadership succession and capacity development in local government.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of political mentorship programs on leadership succession.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of mentorship structures in developing future leaders.
  3. To identify challenges and propose recommendations for enhancing political mentorship initiatives.

Research questions:

  1. How do political mentorship programs affect leadership succession in the study area?
  2. What factors contribute to the effectiveness of these programs?
  3. What challenges limit the success of political mentorship in local government?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Political mentorship programs significantly improve leadership succession.
  2. H2: Effective mentorship structures enhance the preparedness of future leaders.
  3. H3: Inadequate institutional support negatively affects mentorship outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of political mentorship programs in fostering effective leadership succession, offering valuable insights for improving governance in the Awka North Local Government Area. The findings will inform policymakers and program designers on best practices for mentorship initiatives, thereby ensuring sustainable leadership development and enhanced local government performance (Eke, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to investigating the effect of political mentorship programs on leadership succession within the Awka North Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on mentorship structures and leadership development outcomes.

Definitions of terms:
• Political Mentorship Programs: Structured initiatives aimed at guiding and developing emerging political leaders.
• Leadership Succession: The process of preparing and transitioning new leaders into positions of authority.
• Capacity Building: The development of skills and competencies necessary for effective governance.
