Background of the study
Inter-ethnic alliances have emerged as a critical factor influencing local governance efficiency by promoting inclusivity, social cohesion, and collaborative policymaking. In the Afikpo South Local Government Area, diverse ethnic groups have historically coexisted with distinct cultural identities, and recent efforts to forge alliances have aimed to bridge ethnic divides for improved governance. Such alliances facilitate resource sharing, conflict resolution, and collective decision-making, thereby enhancing the efficiency and responsiveness of local government operations (Ifeanyi, 2023). The formation of inter-ethnic partnerships is associated with increased political stability and more effective public service delivery (Uche, 2024). However, challenges remain, as deep-seated historical tensions and power imbalances can undermine these alliances (Nwankwo, 2023). This study investigates the impact of inter-ethnic alliances on local governance efficiency by examining how collaborative efforts among different ethnic groups influence policy implementation, administrative performance, and community trust. The research aims to provide insights into the benefits and limitations of inter-ethnic cooperation in enhancing local government functionality.
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential benefits of inter-ethnic alliances in improving local governance efficiency, persistent challenges continue to affect their effectiveness in the Afikpo South Local Government Area. Historical ethnic tensions, power disparities, and limited institutional support often hinder the successful implementation of collaborative governance initiatives (Eze, 2023). Consequently, the expected improvements in public service delivery and administrative efficiency are not fully realized. The lack of comprehensive empirical studies on the impact of inter-ethnic alliances on local governance efficiency necessitates a focused investigation to identify the factors that facilitate or impede effective inter-ethnic cooperation.
