Background of the study
Gerrymandering, the manipulation of electoral district boundaries for political advantage, significantly affects political representation at the grassroots level. In the Ilorin West Local Government Area, gerrymandering practices have been observed to distort electoral outcomes and marginalize certain communities. By redrawing district lines, political elites can influence voter distribution and undermine the democratic principle of fair representation (Adegoke, 2023). This practice often results in reduced electoral competitiveness and diminished political voice for affected populations. Studies indicate that gerrymandering can lead to voter disenfranchisement and a weakening of community interests (Balogun, 2024). This study investigates the impact of gerrymandering on political representation at the grassroots, examining how manipulated boundaries affect voter engagement, resource allocation, and the overall legitimacy of electoral processes. Through analysis of electoral data and districting maps, the research aims to provide insights into the consequences of gerrymandering and propose strategies for ensuring equitable political representation (Folarin, 2023). The findings will contribute to ongoing debates on electoral reforms and democratic fairness.
Statement of the problem
Despite growing concerns over gerrymandering, its specific impact on grassroots political representation in the Ilorin West Local Government Area remains underexplored. Gerrymandering practices have been implicated in reducing electoral competitiveness and marginalizing minority groups, yet empirical evidence on its direct effects is limited (Ogunleye, 2023). The manipulation of electoral boundaries undermines the democratic process, leading to skewed representation and voter disillusionment. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically examining how gerrymandering influences political representation at the grassroots, thereby informing potential electoral reforms aimed at ensuring fair representation and democratic accountability.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the detrimental effects of gerrymandering on grassroots political representation, providing empirical evidence to support electoral reforms. The findings will aid policymakers, electoral commissions, and civil society organizations in designing strategies to ensure fair representation and enhance democratic processes in the Ilorin West Local Government Area (Olabisi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the effect of gerrymandering on political representation within the Ilorin West Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on electoral district manipulation and its impact on local voter dynamics.
Definitions of terms:
• Gerrymandering: The deliberate manipulation of electoral district boundaries to favor a particular political party or group.
• Political Representation: The degree to which elected officials reflect the demographics and interests of their constituents.
