Background of the study
Campaign promises play a crucial role in shaping voter behavior by setting expectations and influencing electoral decisions. In the Ijebu East Local Government Area, political candidates often make specific commitments aimed at addressing local issues, from infrastructure development to improved public services. These promises serve as a measure of accountability and provide voters with criteria for evaluating candidate credibility (Adepoju, 2023). However, discrepancies between campaign promises and actual policy implementation can lead to voter disillusionment and affect trust in political processes (Ola, 2024). This study examines the effect of campaign promises on voter behavior, investigating how these pledges influence voter perceptions, decision-making processes, and overall electoral outcomes. By analyzing campaign strategies and voter responses, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics between political promises and voter behavior in local elections (Bakare, 2023). The findings will contribute to enhancing campaign transparency and accountability in the political arena.
Statement of the problem
Despite the centrality of campaign promises in electoral politics, there is a paucity of research on how these promises influence voter behavior in the Ijebu East Local Government Area. Inconsistencies between declared promises and actual performance have raised concerns about voter trust and electoral integrity (Ajayi, 2023). Furthermore, the lack of empirical data on the direct relationship between campaign promises and voter decision-making complicates the understanding of electoral dynamics. This study seeks to address this gap by systematically investigating the impact of campaign promises on voter behavior and electoral outcomes.
