Background of the study
Economic hardship significantly influences voter behavior, often altering the priorities and choices of electorates during local elections. In the Oredo Local Government Area, financial constraints and economic instability have been observed to affect voter turnout and decision-making. Economic challenges can lead to voter dissatisfaction with incumbent administrations, prompting a search for alternative candidates who promise economic relief (Okeke, 2023). Moreover, economic hardship tends to exacerbate political polarization, as financial stress influences perceptions of governmental performance and accountability (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines the multifaceted impact of economic hardship on voter behavior by exploring factors such as unemployment, inflation, and income disparity. It aims to determine whether economic distress translates into electoral volatility and shifting political allegiances. The research draws on contemporary data to assess how economic conditions shape voter priorities and influence local election outcomes (Ola, 2023). The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the interplay between economic factors and political behavior, highlighting the need for responsive economic policies to stabilize voter expectations.

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized influence of economic hardship on voter behavior, limited empirical research has addressed this dynamic in the Oredo Local Government Area. Economic distress appears to affect voter turnout, candidate selection, and overall electoral outcomes, yet the extent of this impact remains unclear (Afolabi, 2023). Voters facing financial challenges may prioritize immediate economic relief over long-term governance considerations, potentially destabilizing local political landscapes. The lack of detailed studies on the correlation between economic conditions and voter behavior necessitates a focused investigation to provide clearer insights and inform policy interventions (Nwankwo, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the impact of economic hardship on voter behavior.
  2. To assess the relationship between economic conditions and electoral outcomes.
  3. To identify key economic factors that influence voter decision-making in the study area.

Research questions:

  1. How does economic hardship influence voter behavior in local elections?
  2. What economic factors most significantly affect electoral outcomes?
  3. How do voters prioritize economic concerns in their voting decisions?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Economic hardship significantly influences voter behavior.
  2. H2: Adverse economic conditions lead to lower voter turnout.
  3. H3: Economic distress prompts shifts in voter preferences.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the impact of economic hardship on voter behavior, offering evidence-based recommendations for policymakers. By elucidating the economic factors that drive electoral volatility, the research will help tailor economic and political interventions to stabilize local governance and enhance voter confidence. The findings contribute to broader discussions on economic influences in democratic processes (Obi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to investigating the impact of economic hardship on voter behavior within the Oredo Local Government Area, focusing on economic factors and their influence on local electoral outcomes.

Definitions of terms:
• Economic Hardship: Conditions characterized by financial instability, low income, and limited access to economic resources.
• Voter Behavior: Patterns of decision-making and participation exhibited by voters during elections.
• Electoral Outcomes: The results and implications of election processes and voter choices.
