Background of the study
Religious institutions serve as moral and social anchors in many communities, often stepping in to address sensitive issues such as child abuse. In Esan West, these institutions respond to abuse cases by offering counseling, support services, and sometimes collaborating with legal authorities. Their interventions are informed by doctrinal principles that emphasize protection of the vulnerable and the pursuit of justice. However, the effectiveness of these responses is subject to debate, as traditional practices may conflict with modern legal frameworks (Efe, 2023). Recent studies call for structured approaches to ensure that religious responses are compassionate yet compliant with legal standards (Omoregie, 2024). Furthermore, emerging evidence highlights the need to balance religious authority with accountability when handling child abuse cases (Adeniyi, 2025). This study investigates the strategies employed by religious institutions in Esan West and evaluates their overall effectiveness in addressing child abuse.
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential for religious institutions to provide support in child abuse cases, their responses in Esan West are not well documented. Inconsistent approaches, internal cultural biases, and the absence of standardized protocols often undermine effective intervention. This lack of clear data hampers the ability to develop comprehensive support systems for abuse victims and limits collaboration with legal authorities. The study addresses this gap by assessing how religious institutions respond to child abuse and identifying factors that affect the success of these interventions.
