Background of the study
Traditional religious beliefs have historically influenced political leadership by providing moral frameworks and legitimacy to leaders. In Isuikwuato, these long-held beliefs continue to affect the selection and conduct of political figures. Traditional practices, rituals, and ancestral worship often serve as criteria for determining leadership suitability. Such religious influences imbue leaders with an expectation of integrity, communal responsibility, and moral authority (Ibeh, 2023). The integration of customary religious values with modern political systems creates a unique dynamic where traditional ethics coexist with contemporary governance challenges (Chukwuemeka, 2024). Emerging research suggests that adherence to these traditional values plays a critical role in shaping political accountability and public expectations (Emeka, 2025). This study investigates the impact of traditional religious beliefs on political leadership practices, exploring how these values influence candidate selection, leadership styles, and accountability in Isuikwuato.
Statement of the problem
Despite the deep-rooted influence of traditional religious beliefs on political leadership in Isuikwuato, their precise impact remains underexplored. The reliance on customary practices may both legitimize leaders and constrain modern leadership competencies. This duality creates challenges in understanding how traditional values can be harmonized with contemporary governance needs. The lack of systematic research on this interplay hampers efforts to integrate traditional ethics with modern political accountability. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating how traditional religious beliefs affect political leadership practices and outcomes in the community.
