Background of the study
Religion often plays a pivotal role in shaping societal practices, including child adoption. In Owerri West, religious beliefs significantly influence the norms and procedures surrounding adoption. Various religious doctrines emphasize values such as compassion, duty, and the sanctity of family, which can facilitate the adoption process. Conversely, stringent religious criteria may complicate adoption by imposing restrictive eligibility requirements. Prior research suggests that religious interpretations can lead to both supportive and hindering adoption practices (Nwankwo, 2023). Moreover, modern religious perspectives are increasingly attempting to reconcile traditional practices with contemporary challenges in adoption (Anyanwu, 2024). Emerging evidence further suggests that religious influence remains a decisive factor in shaping adoption policies and societal attitudes (Ibe, 2025). This study explores how religious norms affect adoption practices, focusing on eligibility criteria, procedural challenges, and cultural expectations in Owerri West.
Statement of the problem
Despite the influential role of religion in child adoption practices, limited research specifically addresses its impact in Owerri West. Religious norms often impose stringent criteria that may hinder the adoption process, restricting opportunities for children in need. The absence of comprehensive studies examining the interplay between religious beliefs and adoption practices creates a significant gap in understanding. This gap complicates policy formulation and the development of supportive interventions. The study seeks to address this gap by critically evaluating how religious influences affect child adoption practices, including eligibility and procedural challenges in the community.
