Background of the study
Abortion remains one of the most controversial issues globally, with religious perspectives playing a decisive role in shaping public opinion. In Asaba, Oshimili South, religious institutions offer moral frameworks that deeply influence debates on abortion. Different faith traditions interpret abortion in contrasting ways, with some emphasizing the sanctity of life while others stress the importance of personal autonomy. These divergent views are often reflected in public policy and individual decision-making processes. Studies have shown that religious teachings can both empower and constrain women’s reproductive choices (Okafor, 2023). Additionally, the influence of religious leaders and communities is significant in framing the societal discourse on abortion (Ibe, 2024). Recent societal shifts and legal debates have further complicated these religious perspectives, prompting renewed scholarly interest in reconciling traditional beliefs with contemporary ethical dilemmas (Umeh, 2025). This study critically examines the religious perspectives on abortion in Asaba, aiming to unravel the complexities that shape both policy and personal choices.
Statement of the problem
Despite the profound influence of religious beliefs on abortion debates in Asaba, systematic analysis of these perspectives is limited. Conflicting religious doctrines contribute to a polarized discourse that complicates policy-making and individual decision-making. The absence of clear guidelines balancing religious morality with reproductive rights has heightened social tensions. This research addresses the gap by critically examining how religious perspectives shape abortion debates in the community, identifying the resulting implications for policy and personal autonomy.
