Background of the Study
Natural disasters, including landslides, often result in mass casualties and complex recovery operations. In Ebonyi Local Government Area, forensic anthropology plays a pivotal role in victim identification amid the chaos of disaster scenes. The application of osteological analysis, DNA profiling, and contextual evidence is essential to re-establish identities and provide closure for affected families (Nnamdi, 2023). However, natural disasters complicate traditional forensic procedures due to rapid decomposition and environmental disruptions (Chukwuemeka, 2024). This study investigates how forensic anthropology adapts to the challenges presented by landslide disasters, emphasizing the integration of multidisciplinary techniques to enhance identification accuracy. The research critically evaluates current practices, highlighting successes and deficiencies, and proposes methodological enhancements to improve disaster response and forensic outcomes. The local context, with its unique geological and climatic conditions, underscores the need for specialized approaches tailored to Ebonyi’s disaster-prone environment (Ifeanyi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In the wake of landslide disasters in Ebonyi, forensic teams face significant challenges in identifying victims due to rapid skeletal degradation and environmental interference. Current methods often yield inconclusive results, delaying the identification process and causing distress to affected communities (Eze, 2023). Limited resources and a lack of region-specific protocols further hinder effective forensic analysis. This study aims to evaluate existing forensic anthropology practices in disaster scenarios and identify strategies to enhance victim identification in such challenging contexts (Okonkwo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the effectiveness of current forensic methods in disaster victim identification.
To identify environmental and procedural challenges affecting identification accuracy.
To recommend enhanced, region-specific forensic protocols.
Research Questions:
What are the primary challenges in identifying disaster victims in landslide events?
How effective are current forensic methods under such conditions?
What improvements can be introduced to enhance identification outcomes?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Integrating multidisciplinary techniques significantly improves disaster victim identification.
H₂: Environmental factors severely compromise traditional forensic methods.
H₃: Region-specific protocols enhance overall forensic effectiveness.
Significance of the Study
This study will improve disaster victim identification by addressing challenges unique to landslide events. The findings will inform more effective forensic protocols, ensuring timely and accurate identifications. Enhanced methodologies will support disaster management efforts and provide critical closure for affected families (Nwankwo, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to forensic anthropology practices in identifying victims of natural disasters in Ebonyi Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on landslide-related challenges and methodologies.
Definitions of Terms:
Natural Disaster: A catastrophic event caused by natural processes, such as landslides.
Disaster Victim Identification (DVI): The process of identifying individuals deceased in catastrophic events.
Multidisciplinary Techniques: Integrated methods from various scientific fields used in forensic investigations.
