Background of the Study
Postmortem examinations are integral to forensic investigations, particularly in cases involving skeletal remains. In Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, forensic anthropology is employed to elucidate the circumstances surrounding death through meticulous skeletal analysis. The discipline has evolved to include not only traditional osteological methods but also cutting-edge imaging and chemical analyses that offer deeper insights into trauma and pathological conditions (Chinwe, 2023). However, local challenges such as limited laboratory resources and inconsistent training hinder optimal outcomes (Okoroafor, 2024). This study examines the integration of advanced forensic techniques in postmortem analyses, emphasizing the importance of standardized procedures to ensure judicial accuracy. By focusing on case studies from Awka South, the research highlights both successful practices and areas needing improvement. The evolving nature of forensic anthropology, supported by recent technological innovations, promises enhanced reliability in cause-of-death determinations and victim identification (Ugochukwu, 2025). The study situates its analysis within the broader context of forensic medicine, advocating for greater investment in forensic infrastructure and professional development to bridge existing gaps.

Statement of the Problem
In Awka South, forensic investigations of skeletal remains are often compromised by inadequate technological support and inconsistent application of postmortem protocols. This inadequacy leads to delays in case resolution and potential miscarriages of justice (Ifeoma, 2023). The absence of standardized procedures and limited forensic expertise further exacerbate the problem. This study addresses the gap between advanced forensic techniques and current local practices, aiming to identify critical deficiencies and propose actionable improvements (Nkem, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the current postmortem examination protocols in Awka South.

  2. To identify technological and training gaps in forensic anthropology.

  3. To recommend standardized practices for improved case resolution.

Research Questions:

  1. What methods are currently employed in postmortem examinations of skeletal remains?

  2. How do resource limitations affect forensic outcomes?

  3. What standardized practices can be introduced to enhance investigation accuracy?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: The adoption of advanced imaging significantly improves postmortem analysis.

  2. H₂: Inadequate training adversely affects the reliability of forensic findings.

  3. H₃: Standardized protocols lead to more consistent forensic outcomes.

Significance of the Study
The study is significant for strengthening forensic postmortem practices in Awka South by addressing technological and training gaps. Improved procedures will enhance judicial accuracy and expedite case resolution. The findings will contribute to policy recommendations and capacity building in forensic anthropology, thereby supporting effective legal processes (Ebele, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This research is confined to postmortem forensic anthropology practices in Awka South Local Government Area, focusing solely on the evaluation of skeletal analysis methods and related challenges.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Postmortem Examination: A detailed analysis conducted after death to determine cause and manner.

  2. Osteological Methods: Techniques used to study and analyze bones.

  3. Forensic Infrastructure: The facilities and resources available for forensic investigations.
