Background of the Study
Forensic anthropology is increasingly pivotal in differentiating human remains from animal remains, a distinction that is critical for criminal investigations and mass disaster scenarios. In Esan North-East Local Government Area, Edo State, the challenge is amplified by cases where decomposition and environmental factors obscure biological markers. Recent studies indicate that morphological and metric analyses, complemented by biochemical assays, can reliably distinguish between species (Udo, 2023). However, the application of these methods in the field is not without challenges, as improper handling and limited technological support can lead to misidentification (Omololu, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of forensic protocols employed locally, focusing on the integration of traditional osteological techniques with emerging technologies. Emphasis is placed on training, resource availability, and procedural standardization, with an aim to reduce error margins. The study builds on current literature that highlights both the promise and the pitfalls of forensic anthropological methods in diverse environmental contexts (Bello, 2025), thereby setting a framework for enhanced accuracy and reliability in distinguishing between human and animal remains.

Statement of the Problem
The forensic community in Esan North-East faces significant challenges in differentiating human remains from animal remains, leading to potential misinterpretations in legal contexts. Inadequate methodological standardization and technological constraints contribute to errors in species determination (Akinyemi, 2023). This misidentification can delay investigations and compromise judicial outcomes. The study aims to pinpoint these challenges and evaluate the current effectiveness of forensic methods in accurately distinguishing remains (Olatunde, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess current forensic methods used in distinguishing human from animal remains.

  2. To identify key challenges and technological limitations in the region.

  3. To recommend methodological improvements for increased accuracy.

Research Questions:

  1. What techniques are primarily used to differentiate human and animal remains?

  2. How do regional environmental factors affect these techniques?

  3. What procedural enhancements can mitigate current limitations?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Advanced biochemical assays significantly improve species identification accuracy.

  2. H₂: Environmental factors adversely affect the precision of morphological analyses.

  3. H₃: Standardized training programs enhance the overall effectiveness of forensic procedures.

Significance of the Study
The study will provide valuable insights into refining forensic protocols, thereby reducing misidentification cases. By enhancing species determination methods, it supports judicial accuracy and reinforces scientific standards in Esan North-East. The research outcomes will inform policy revisions and training modules, ultimately contributing to more reliable forensic investigations (Afolabi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to the evaluation of forensic anthropology methods for species differentiation in Esan North-East Local Government Area, focusing solely on methodological aspects and regional environmental influences.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Morphological Analysis: The study of the structure and form of organisms.

  2. Biochemical Assays: Laboratory methods used to detect and measure chemical processes in biological samples.

  3. Species Identification: The process of determining the biological classification of remains.
