Background of the Study
Forensic anthropology has emerged as an essential discipline in modern criminal investigations by applying anthropological methods to legal contexts. In Ondo West Local Government Area, skeletonized remains pose unique challenges in ascertaining the cause of death due to environmental degradation and prolonged exposure. Recent investigations have demonstrated that meticulous osteological analysis can reveal trauma, disease, and peri-mortem events that are otherwise obscured (Olawale, 2023). The integration of advanced imaging and molecular techniques further refines these assessments, enhancing both accuracy and reliability (Adekola, 2024). The interplay between cultural practices in death management and the scientific demands of forensic inquiry has necessitated localized studies. Furthermore, the adoption of standardized protocols has improved inter-agency collaborations, yet many gaps persist in training and resource allocation. The present study is driven by the need to establish a clear methodological framework that accommodates regional peculiarities. With forensic anthropology evolving rapidly, local case studies can contribute significantly to national databases while also ensuring that judicial processes benefit from robust scientific evidence (Balogun, 2025). The background reflects ongoing debates regarding methodology, evidentiary standards, and the interplay between scientific innovation and traditional practices in death investigation.

Statement of the Problem
Despite advancements in forensic methods, challenges persist in accurately determining the cause of death in skeletonized remains in Ondo West. The paucity of specialized training and limited access to state‐of‐the‐art equipment result in delays and potential misinterpretations (Adebayo, 2023). The lack of region-specific studies further hinders the adaptation of global protocols to local realities. Consequently, unresolved forensic questions undermine the judicial process, necessitating an investigation into tailored approaches that can bridge the gap between theoretical advances and practical implementation (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the efficacy of current forensic anthropology techniques in Ondo West.

  2. To identify challenges and propose methodological adaptations for local skeletonized remains.

  3. To develop recommendations for enhancing forensic protocols in the region.

Research Questions:

  1. How effective are current forensic techniques in determining cause of death from skeletonized remains?

  2. What challenges impede the accurate analysis of such remains in Ondo West?

  3. Which methodological improvements can be implemented to enhance forensic outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: The integration of advanced imaging techniques significantly improves the determination of cause of death.

  2. H₂: Limited regional resources adversely affect the accuracy of forensic anthropological analyses.

  3. H₃: Tailored training programs will enhance the investigative outcomes in Ondo West.

Significance of the Study
This study provides crucial insights into enhancing forensic practices within Ondo West by establishing region-specific protocols. It contributes to both academic literature and practical judicial improvements, facilitating more accurate death investigations. The findings will inform policy, training, and resource allocation, ultimately supporting effective legal proceedings and improving public trust in forensic science (Olayemi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to forensic anthropology practices related to skeletonized remains in Ondo West Local Government Area. It focuses solely on the local challenges and does not account for national or international variations.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Forensic Anthropology: The application of anthropological methods to legal investigations.

  2. Skeletonized Remains: Human remains that have undergone complete decomposition leaving only the skeletal structure.

  3. Cause of Death: The medical or forensic determination regarding the event or injury that led to death.
