Background of the Study
Urbanization in Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State, has accelerated rapidly over recent years, resulting in significant transformations in land use, social structures, and cultural practices. One of the most affected aspects is traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), which encompasses indigenous understandings of the environment, natural resource management, and sustainable practices passed down through generations (Nwankwo, 2023). As urban expansion encroaches upon rural and semi-urban areas, the reliance on traditional ecological practices declines, leading to the erosion of cultural heritage and loss of environmental stewardship (Chukwu, 2024). Urban lifestyles, characterized by modern technologies and altered value systems, gradually supplant traditional practices that once maintained ecological balance. Recent studies emphasize the importance of preserving TEK as a resource for sustainable environmental management (Eze, 2025). This study examines the effects of urbanization on TEK in Enugu East, exploring how rapid development influences the transmission and application of traditional knowledge, and identifying measures to preserve these valuable practices amidst urban growth.

Statement of the Problem
Urbanization in Enugu East is contributing to the gradual erosion of traditional ecological knowledge. As modern practices and technologies dominate, the intergenerational transmission of indigenous environmental wisdom is increasingly disrupted (Ibekwe, 2024). This loss not only diminishes cultural heritage but also undermines sustainable resource management practices that have historically maintained ecological balance. The study seeks to explore how urbanization affects TEK and to propose strategies to preserve these traditional practices for the benefit of environmental sustainability and cultural continuity.

Objectives of the Study:
• To assess the impact of urbanization on the transmission of traditional ecological knowledge.
• To evaluate the consequences of TEK erosion on local environmental management.
• To propose measures to preserve and integrate TEK within modern urban planning.

Research Questions:
• How has urbanization affected the transmission of traditional ecological knowledge in Enugu East?
• What are the environmental consequences of diminishing TEK?
• What strategies can be employed to integrate TEK into urban development plans?

Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Urbanization significantly disrupts the intergenerational transmission of traditional ecological knowledge.
• H2: The erosion of TEK adversely impacts local environmental management practices.
• H3: Integrating TEK into urban planning enhances sustainable development outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study is crucial for highlighting the impact of urbanization on traditional ecological knowledge in Enugu East. Its findings will inform policy and community efforts to preserve indigenous wisdom and promote sustainable urban development (Okafor, 2023; Nwachukwu, 2025). The research emphasizes the need to balance modern growth with cultural and environmental preservation, ensuring that traditional practices continue to benefit society.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of urbanization on traditional ecological knowledge in Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State. It focuses solely on the transmission and application of TEK within the context of urban growth, excluding other socio-cultural impacts of urbanization. Data are derived exclusively from local community insights and environmental studies.

Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK): Indigenous knowledge and practices related to the environment and natural resource management.
Urbanization: The process of population concentration and infrastructure development in urban areas.
Cultural Heritage: The legacy of traditional practices, values, and knowledge passed through generations.
