Background of the Study
Gully erosion in Anambra West Local Government Area, Anambra State, has emerged as a critical environmental challenge affecting rural communities. Rural farmers, whose livelihoods depend heavily on stable agricultural land, face severe losses as gullies encroach upon fertile farmlands (Nwachukwu, 2023). The process of gully erosion not only reduces the availability of arable land but also disrupts local ecosystems and water drainage patterns (Onyema, 2024). As a consequence, rural farmers experience decreased crop yields and increased vulnerability to economic shocks. Local government interventions have been sporadic, and many mitigation strategies remain inadequately implemented. Research indicates that effective soil conservation and sustainable land management practices can significantly reduce erosion rates (Eke, 2025). This study examines the extent of gully erosion, quantifies its economic impact on rural farmers, and explores adaptive measures to protect agricultural productivity. By integrating environmental and socio-economic perspectives, the research seeks to provide comprehensive recommendations for sustainable land use and rural development.

Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to control gully erosion in Anambra West, rural farmers continue to suffer significant economic setbacks due to the loss of productive land. Inadequate government intervention, poor implementation of conservation practices, and limited farmer awareness exacerbate the problem (Okafor, 2024). The resulting decrease in agricultural output undermines food security and local economic stability. This study aims to investigate the direct economic consequences of gully erosion on rural farming communities and identify practical strategies to mitigate land degradation, thereby enhancing both agricultural productivity and economic resilience.

Objectives of the Study:
• To quantify the extent of gully erosion and its effect on agricultural land.
• To assess the economic losses incurred by rural farmers due to erosion.
• To propose sustainable soil conservation and land management strategies.

Research Questions:
• How extensive is gully erosion in Anambra West and what areas are most affected?
• What are the economic impacts of gully erosion on rural farmers’ incomes?
• Which soil conservation practices can effectively mitigate erosion?

Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Gully erosion significantly reduces available agricultural land in the study area.
• H2: Economic losses among rural farmers are directly proportional to erosion severity.
• H3: Adoption of sustainable land management practices improves farm productivity.

Significance of the Study
This study is crucial for highlighting the economic repercussions of gully erosion on rural farming communities. Its findings will inform policymakers and stakeholders on effective land management and soil conservation strategies to enhance agricultural productivity. The recommendations aim to improve rural livelihoods and support sustainable development in erosion-prone areas (Umeh, 2023; Ibekwe, 2025). The study’s insights are vital for environmental planning and economic resilience.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing gully erosion and its economic impact on rural farmers in Anambra West Local Government Area, Anambra State. It focuses on quantifying land loss, economic consequences, and conservation strategies, excluding broader regional erosion issues. Data are limited to primary and secondary sources directly related to the study area.

Definitions of Terms:
Gully Erosion: The severe removal of soil along drainage channels leading to the formation of deep channels.
Economic Impact: The measurable financial losses incurred by affected communities.
Soil Conservation: Practices aimed at preventing soil degradation and maintaining soil productivity.
