Background of the Study
Oil spills in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, have increasingly disrupted fishing-dependent communities. The region, rich in hydrocarbon resources, has witnessed recurrent environmental disasters that not only compromise aquatic ecosystems but also jeopardize the traditional livelihoods of fishermen (Udo, 2023). Over time, oil contamination has led to reduced fish populations, impaired water quality, and increased health risks among local residents (Ogun, 2024). Consequently, communities that depend on fishing as their primary source of income face economic instability and social challenges. Previous studies have highlighted the environmental degradation and socio-economic setbacks caused by such spills, yet comprehensive evaluations focusing on livelihood disruptions remain sparse (Emeka, 2025). This study investigates the multifaceted effects of oil spills on fishing-dependent communities by examining environmental damage, economic losses, and the adaptive strategies employed by affected households. Through an integrated approach, the research seeks to illuminate the extent to which oil spills undermine traditional livelihoods, thereby providing actionable insights for remediation and policy development.

Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing remediation efforts, oil spills in Southern Ijaw continue to devastate fishing communities, leading to severe economic and environmental challenges. The persistent contamination of water bodies has resulted in declining fish stocks, thereby eroding the primary income source for local fishermen. Inadequate policy responses and limited community support exacerbate the situation, leaving residents with few adaptive strategies (Ibe, 2024). This study aims to address the critical gap in understanding the direct correlation between oil spills and the degradation of fishing-dependent livelihoods, thereby informing more effective environmental and economic policies.

Objectives of the Study:
• To assess the environmental impact of oil spills on local fish populations and water quality.
• To evaluate the economic repercussions of oil spills on fishing-dependent livelihoods.
• To recommend sustainable adaptation and remediation strategies for affected communities.

Research Questions:
• How do oil spills affect fish populations and aquatic ecosystems in Southern Ijaw?
• What economic challenges do fishing communities face due to oil contamination?
• What adaptive measures can enhance resilience in fishing-dependent livelihoods?

Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Oil spills significantly reduce local fish populations and degrade water quality.
• H2: Fishing communities experience measurable economic losses directly linked to oil spills.
• H3: Implementation of sustainable remediation strategies improves livelihood resilience.

Significance of the Study
This study is essential for revealing the direct impact of oil spills on fishing-dependent communities, providing evidence to inform effective environmental and economic policies. The findings will aid stakeholders in designing sustainable remediation programs and support adaptive livelihood strategies, ultimately fostering community resilience (Ibrahim, 2023; Uche, 2025). The research contributes to both environmental conservation and socio-economic stability in affected regions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing the effects of oil spills on fishing-dependent livelihoods in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. It focuses solely on environmental degradation, economic losses, and adaptive strategies, excluding broader regional or national oil spill impacts. Data are restricted to sources directly related to local fishing communities and environmental assessments.

Definitions of Terms:
Oil Spill: The release of petroleum into the environment, adversely affecting aquatic life.
Fishing-dependent Livelihoods: Economic activities primarily based on fishing.
Remediation Strategies: Methods and actions aimed at mitigating environmental damage and restoring economic stability.
