Background of the Study
Colonial political structures have left a lasting legacy on contemporary governance systems in many former colonies, influencing administrative practices, institutional frameworks, and power dynamics. In Benin City, Edo State, historical colonial legacies continue to shape the functioning of local government institutions. These influences manifest in centralized decision-making practices, bureaucratic rigidity, and persistent power hierarchies that affect local governance (Ade, 2023). Recent scholarly work suggests that while some colonial-era structures have been adapted to modern contexts, they often hinder the evolution of truly democratic and participatory governance models (Okafor, 2024). The enduring impact of these historical frameworks calls for a critical evaluation of how colonial legacies continue to influence current local administrative processes (Chukwu, 2025). This study examines the extent to which colonial political structures have shaped contemporary local governance in Benin City, identifying both the residual challenges and opportunities for reform. Through historical analysis and modern case studies, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between past and present governance models.
Statement of the Problem
In Benin City, the remnants of colonial political structures have created challenges for modern local governance. The persistence of centralized, hierarchical practices inherited from colonial administration has impeded the development of more flexible, participatory, and transparent local government systems. This legacy poses obstacles to effective policy implementation and citizen engagement. The study seeks to investigate how these colonial influences continue to affect contemporary governance and to propose strategies for reform that align local practices with modern democratic ideals (Ade, 2023; Okafor, 2024).
