Background of the study
Boat mishaps in coastal regions often result in the loss of life and the subsequent need for human remains identification. In Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State, forensic anthropology is crucial in identifying victims from boat accidents. Advanced methods such as skeletal analysis, DNA profiling, and radiographic imaging are employed to determine identities and causes of death in challenging marine environments (Olu, 2023). Recent technological advancements have improved identification accuracy; however, issues such as water degradation, limited forensic infrastructure, and logistical challenges persist (Adebayo, 2024). This study explores the role of forensic anthropology in human remains identification from boat mishaps, aiming to assess current methodologies and propose enhancements. By integrating forensic evidence with accident investigation protocols, the research seeks to improve victim identification processes, support legal proceedings, and provide closure for affected families (Ekun, 2025). The study will utilize case studies, forensic laboratory experiments, and field investigations to develop a comprehensive framework for identifying casualties in boat mishap disasters. It will compare regional practices with international standards to recommend effective improvements ultimately ensuring swift justice and significantly enhanced community resilience.

Statement of the problem
Despite advancements in forensic anthropology, human remains identification from boat mishaps in Ilaje faces significant challenges. Water degradation, limited forensic infrastructure, and complex marine conditions hinder the accuracy of victim identification (Olu, 2023; Adebayo, 2024). These issues complicate legal investigations and delay closure for affected families (Ekun, 2025). Traditional methods may be insufficient in the harsh coastal environment, leading to unresolved cases. This study addresses these challenges by evaluating current forensic practices and proposing strategic improvements to enhance identification accuracy and support maritime disaster investigations. Immediate, effective solutions are needed.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess current forensic methodologies in identifying human remains from boat mishaps.

  • To identify challenges in forensic investigations in maritime disaster scenarios.

  • To propose strategic improvements for enhancing victim identification accuracy in boat mishap cases.

Research questions:

  • What forensic techniques are employed in identifying human remains from boat mishaps?

  • What challenges hinder accurate identification of victims in maritime environments?

  • How can forensic methodologies be improved to support legal investigations after boat mishaps?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly improve identification accuracy in boat mishap cases.

  • H2: Environmental and infrastructural challenges negatively affect victim identification outcomes.

  • H3: Strategic methodological improvements will enhance forensic responses in maritime disasters.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of forensic anthropology in human remains identification following boat mishaps. The research aims to improve forensic methodologies, support legal investigations, and provide closure for affected families. Findings are expected to inform policy reforms, enhance forensic training, and ultimately contribute to safer maritime operations and effective disaster management in coastal regions.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Boat Mishaps: Accidents involving watercraft resulting in loss of life.

  • Human Remains Identification: The process of determining the identity of deceased individuals.

  • Radiographic Imaging: The use of imaging technology to analyze skeletal structures.
