Background of the study
Communal clashes in Yakurr Local Government Area have led to numerous missing persons cases, leaving families in limbo and impeding justice. Forensic anthropology has increasingly been applied to resolve such cases by employing skeletal analysis, DNA profiling, and contextual reconstruction (Obi, 2023). Recent technological advancements have enhanced the capacity to match unidentified remains with missing persons reports, yet operational challenges remain due to infrastructural deficits and a lack of standardized protocols (Nwosu, 2024). This study evaluates how forensic anthropology can be leveraged to bridge the gap between missing persons and recovered remains. It examines the interplay between modern forensic techniques and community-based investigations, highlighting both successes and persistent challenges (Udo, 2025). By integrating field data, laboratory analyses, and case studies, the research aims to propose strategic improvements that can accelerate identification processes and support legal redress for affected families.

Statement of the problem
Missing persons cases arising from communal clashes in Yakurr are compounded by inadequate forensic facilities and inconsistent investigation protocols (Obi, 2023; Nwosu, 2024). The absence of standardized methodologies in forensic anthropology leads to delays and inaccuracies in identifying remains (Udo, 2025). Consequently, unresolved cases persist, prolonging family suffering and hindering justice. This study addresses these systemic issues by evaluating current forensic practices and identifying opportunities for improvement in the identification process.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess current forensic techniques in missing persons investigations.

  • To identify challenges affecting the identification of remains in communal clashes.

  • To propose strategic improvements for enhanced forensic outcomes.

Research questions:

  • What forensic methods are currently used in Yakurr for missing persons cases?

  • What are the main challenges in these forensic investigations?

  • How can identification protocols be improved to resolve cases more efficiently?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced forensic techniques improve identification rates in missing persons cases.

  • H2: Infrastructural deficits negatively impact forensic outcomes.

  • H3: Standardizing investigation protocols will expedite the identification process.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it directly addresses the urgent need for improved forensic methods in resolving missing persons cases resulting from communal clashes. By identifying current shortcomings and proposing evidence-based improvements, the research aims to enhance legal accountability, support affected families, and contribute to community healing and policy reform.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Missing Persons: Individuals unaccounted for following communal conflicts.

  • Communal Clashes: Conflicts between community groups leading to violence.

  • Forensic Anthropology: The scientific study of human remains for legal purposes.
