Background of the study
Public mortuaries in Igueben Local Government Area face a persistent challenge with unknown corpses that remain unclaimed and unidentified. Over recent years, delays in the investigation process have compounded due to insufficient forensic resources and outdated identification protocols. Forensic anthropology offers promising techniques such as osteological analysis, facial reconstruction, and DNA profiling to bridge the gap in traditional methods (Adebayo, 2023). Recent research has demonstrated that integrating digital imaging and biometric data can enhance identification accuracy even in severely decomposed remains (Okeke, 2024). However, limited funding, inadequate training of personnel, and infrastructural constraints hinder the routine application of these advanced techniques in local mortuaries (Emeka, 2025). This study critically examines the current state of forensic anthropology as applied to unknown corpses in public mortuaries. It aims to evaluate methodological strengths and weaknesses, explore the impact of technological innovations, and propose a framework for improved identification practices that could lead to faster legal processing and provide closure to families.

Statement of the problem
The identification of unknown corpses in Igueben’s public mortuaries is hampered by outdated methodologies, inadequate forensic infrastructure, and insufficient expertise (Adebayo, 2023). These challenges lead to delays in case resolution and undermine the criminal justice process. Moreover, the lack of modern forensic techniques results in high rates of misidentification, complicating legal and administrative proceedings (Okeke, 2024). Without significant improvements, families remain without closure, and the burden on law enforcement increases. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating current practices and proposing actionable solutions.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess current forensic anthropological techniques used in identifying unknown corpses.

  • To evaluate the limitations and challenges faced by public mortuaries in Igueben.

  • To propose a framework for integrating modern forensic methods to improve identification accuracy.

Research questions:

  • What forensic techniques are currently employed in public mortuaries for corpse identification?

  • What are the primary challenges limiting effective identification of unknown corpses in Igueben?

  • How can advanced forensic methods be integrated to enhance identification accuracy?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: The integration of digital imaging significantly improves the identification of unknown corpses.

  • H2: Limited forensic resources adversely affect identification outcomes in public mortuaries.

  • H3: Implementing targeted training programs will enhance the application of forensic anthropology.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses critical gaps in the identification process of unknown corpses within public mortuaries. By proposing innovative forensic methodologies and improved training, the findings can streamline legal procedures, provide closure for affected families, and inform policy reforms. Enhanced forensic practices will ultimately contribute to more efficient criminal investigations and justice delivery in Igueben.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Unknown Corpses: Deceased individuals whose identities remain undetermined.

  • Public Mortuaries: Government-run facilities for the storage and examination of human remains.

  • Forensic Anthropology: The scientific study of human remains for legal purposes.
