Background of the Study
In Okrika Local Government Area, Rivers State, the belief in ancestral spirits plays a significant role in shaping how individuals cope with grief. This belief system offers a framework through which community members interpret loss and find comfort in the continued presence of their forebears (Ibe, 2023). Rituals, prayers, and communal gatherings dedicated to ancestral worship are believed to provide solace, helping individuals process grief and sustain emotional resilience (Obasi, 2024). Contemporary research suggests that such spiritual practices can mitigate feelings of isolation and despair, fostering a sense of continuity and connection with past generations (Ajagbe, 2025). This study investigates the influence of ancestral spirit beliefs on coping mechanisms among bereaved individuals, examining how cultural practices and spiritual support contribute to emotional healing and resilience in the face of loss (Eze, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although belief in ancestral spirits is deeply rooted in Okrika, there is a lack of empirical evidence on how these beliefs affect coping with grief. Many individuals rely on spiritual practices to manage loss, yet the psychological impact of these beliefs remains underexplored (Onyekachi, 2024). The absence of systematic studies creates a gap in understanding the efficacy of ancestral practices in alleviating grief-related distress. This study aims to examine the role of ancestral beliefs in the grieving process and their impact on emotional recovery (Okafor, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the influence of ancestral spirit beliefs on coping with grief.
To explore the role of spiritual practices in emotional recovery.
To recommend strategies for integrating ancestral practices with modern grief counseling.
Research Questions:
How do ancestral spirit beliefs influence coping mechanisms?
What role do spiritual practices play in alleviating grief?
How can ancestral and modern approaches be integrated in grief management?
Research Hypotheses:
Belief in ancestral spirits significantly improves coping with grief.
Spiritual practices are positively correlated with emotional recovery.
Integration of ancestral beliefs with modern counseling enhances grief management.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the psychological benefits of ancestral spirit beliefs in coping with grief. The insights gained will aid mental health professionals and community leaders in designing culturally appropriate grief support interventions, fostering holistic healing in Okrika (Chinwe, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the effect of belief in ancestral spirits on coping with grief in Okrika Local Government Area, Rivers State, excluding other coping mechanisms or regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Ancestral Spirits: The believed spiritual presence of deceased ancestors.
Coping with Grief: The methods and practices employed to manage loss.
