Background of the Study
Generational trauma refers to the transmission of traumatic experiences from one generation to the next, significantly influencing family dynamics and individual mental health. In Orlu Local Government Area, Imo State, historical and socio-cultural events have contributed to patterns of trauma that persist within families (Nwankwo, 2023). Such trauma can manifest in various ways, including anxiety, depression, and maladaptive coping strategies, which are often passed down through generations (Okeke, 2024). Contemporary research underscores that the cumulative effects of trauma can lead to long-term psychological disturbances, altering family structures and social behaviors (Uzo, 2025). This study investigates the manifestations of generational trauma in Orlu families, exploring how historical events, cultural narratives, and familial interactions contribute to a cycle of psychological distress. The research aims to identify key factors that perpetuate trauma transmission and to propose intervention strategies that promote healing and resilience (Chukwu, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
In Orlu, generational trauma remains a pervasive issue, yet its specific manifestations and impacts on families are poorly understood (Ikechukwu, 2024). Many families suffer from repeated cycles of emotional distress, which hinder effective communication and healthy coping mechanisms. The lack of focused studies on generational trauma in this area contributes to gaps in intervention strategies. This research aims to systematically investigate how trauma is transmitted within families and to identify factors that exacerbate or mitigate its psychological effects (Onyema, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To explore the manifestations of generational trauma in families.

  2. To identify key factors that contribute to trauma transmission.

  3. To propose effective intervention strategies to break the cycle of trauma.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the manifestations of generational trauma in Orlu families?

  2. How are traumatic experiences transmitted across generations?

  3. What interventions can reduce the impact of generational trauma?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Generational trauma significantly affects family mental health.

  2. Intergenerational transmission of trauma is influenced by cultural narratives.

  3. Targeted interventions can mitigate the negative effects of generational trauma.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a deeper understanding of generational trauma and its impact on families, offering insights for mental health professionals and community leaders. The findings will help in designing culturally sensitive interventions to foster healing and resilience in affected families (Eke, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to exploring generational trauma and its manifestations in families within Orlu Local Government Area, Imo State, without extending to other regions or non-familial trauma.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Generational Trauma: The transmission of traumatic experiences from one generation to the next.

  • Trauma Manifestations: Behavioral and psychological symptoms resulting from trauma.

  • Intervention Strategies: Methods employed to alleviate or prevent adverse psychological outcomes.
