Background of the Study
Unemployment among youths has emerged as a critical social challenge in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, with significant repercussions on mental health. In this context, the lack of employment opportunities contributes to heightened stress, depression, and anxiety among young individuals (Ike, 2023). Recent studies indicate that prolonged joblessness not only undermines financial stability but also erodes self-esteem and social identity (Ejiogu, 2024). The interplay between unemployment and mental health has garnered increasing attention from scholars who emphasize that social exclusion and economic deprivation can lead to adverse psychological outcomes (Obi, 2025). This study assesses the mental health implications of youth unemployment, examining how the absence of gainful employment influences emotional well-being and social behavior. By integrating both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the psychological burdens imposed by unemployment, thus informing community-based interventions and policy reforms (Akindele, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Unemployment among youths in Uyo has created a surge in mental health challenges, with many young individuals experiencing persistent feelings of hopelessness and diminished self-worth (Chima, 2024). The gap between the demand for jobs and the available opportunities exacerbates psychological distress and increases the risk of social deviance. Despite the growing concern, limited research has been conducted to systematically assess the mental health implications of unemployment in this area. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining the link between unemployment and its adverse psychological effects among the youth (Madu, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the relationship between unemployment and mental health among youths.
To identify key psychological impacts resulting from prolonged joblessness.
To suggest effective intervention strategies for improving mental health outcomes.
Research Questions:
What are the mental health challenges faced by unemployed youths in Uyo?
How does unemployment influence self-esteem and social behavior?
What measures can mitigate the adverse psychological effects of unemployment?
Research Hypotheses:
Unemployment significantly increases psychological distress among youths.
There is a negative correlation between joblessness and self-esteem.
Targeted interventions can improve mental health outcomes among unemployed youths.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the mental health challenges associated with youth unemployment in Uyo. By identifying critical stressors and proposing intervention strategies, the findings will aid policymakers and community organizations in developing programs that promote psychological resilience and economic empowerment (Ijeoma, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the mental health implications of unemployment among youths in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, and does not extend to other regions or age groups.
