Background of the study:
Traditional treatment approaches to anemia have been widely practiced in Sagamu Local Government, Ogun State, where indigenous remedies are employed to manage this condition. These approaches often involve the use of locally available herbs, dietary practices, and traditional therapies that have been handed down through generations (Ojo, 2023; Akinola, 2024). In many communities, traditional treatments are preferred due to their accessibility, cultural acceptance, and perceived efficacy. However, the prevalence of anemia remains high, raising questions about the adequacy and safety of these practices. Recent studies suggest that while some traditional remedies show promise in improving hemoglobin levels, there is a need for rigorous scientific evaluation to validate their effectiveness and ensure patient safety (Bamidele, 2025). This study seeks to assess the traditional treatment approaches to anemia, exploring both the cultural rationale behind these practices and their clinical outcomes, to determine their role in contemporary healthcare (Fadeyi, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
In Sagamu, despite widespread reliance on traditional treatment approaches for anemia, the persistent high prevalence of the condition suggests that these remedies may be inadequate or inconsistently effective. The lack of standardized treatment protocols and scientific validation raises concerns about patient safety and the overall impact of traditional practices on anemia management (Olubayo, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To identify traditional treatment methods used for anemia in Sagamu.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of these approaches.
To recommend strategies for integrating effective traditional treatments with modern anemia management protocols.
Research questions:
What traditional methods are used to treat anemia in Sagamu?
How effective and safe are these traditional treatments?
What strategies can enhance the integration of traditional and modern treatments for anemia?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional treatments for anemia have a significant effect on improving hemoglobin levels.
There is variability in the safety and efficacy of these traditional methods.
An integrated approach can lead to improved management of anemia.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides a critical evaluation of traditional anemia treatments, potentially informing health policies and integration strategies that improve anemia management while preserving cultural practices (Olatunde, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to assessing traditional treatment approaches to anemia in Sagamu Local Government, focusing on local practices and their clinical outcomes.
Definitions of terms:
Traditional treatment approaches: Indigenous methods and remedies used to treat illnesses.
Anemia: A condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin.
Integration: The process of combining traditional and modern treatment methods for improved healthcare outcomes.
