Background of the study:
Indigenous massage therapy is a longstanding tradition in Ilorin West Local Government, Kwara State, and is often employed to facilitate postpartum recovery. Rooted in indigenous healing practices, massage therapy is believed to enhance blood circulation, alleviate pain, and promote overall physical and mental well-being after childbirth (Olatunde, 2023; Suleiman, 2024). These therapies, typically administered by experienced traditional practitioners, complement modern postpartum care by addressing common recovery challenges such as muscle tension, poor circulation, and stress. Recent studies have shown that integrating traditional massage techniques with conventional postpartum care may improve recovery outcomes and maternal satisfaction (Bello, 2025). However, the effectiveness and safety of these indigenous practices remain under-researched, necessitating a thorough evaluation. This study will explore the role of indigenous massage therapy in postpartum recovery, examining its benefits, challenges, and potential for integration with modern healthcare practices (Abiola, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
In Ilorin West, while indigenous massage therapy is widely practiced for postpartum recovery, its efficacy and safety are not well documented. This lack of empirical evidence hinders its full acceptance and integration into formal postpartum care programs. Concerns regarding standardization and practitioner qualifications further complicate its application, potentially affecting maternal recovery outcomes (Ogun, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the effects of indigenous massage therapy on postpartum recovery.
To assess the safety and efficacy of traditional massage practices.
To propose integration methods for indigenous and modern postpartum care.
Research questions:
How does indigenous massage therapy affect postpartum recovery outcomes?
What are the perceived benefits and risks associated with these practices?
How can indigenous massage therapy be safely integrated with modern postpartum care?
Research Hypotheses:
Indigenous massage therapy significantly improves postpartum recovery outcomes.
Traditional massage practices are perceived as both beneficial and safe by postpartum mothers.
Integration of indigenous massage with modern care enhances overall maternal recovery.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides evidence on the benefits and safety of indigenous massage therapy for postpartum recovery, offering insights for integrating traditional practices with modern healthcare to improve maternal well-being (Olumide, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to assessing the impact of indigenous massage therapy on postpartum recovery in Ilorin West Local Government, focusing on local practices and maternal health outcomes.
Definitions of terms:
Indigenous massage therapy: Traditional massage techniques passed down through generations.
Postpartum recovery: The period following childbirth during which a mother regains her physical and emotional well-being.
Integration: The process of combining traditional healing methods with modern medical care.
