Background of the study:
Traditional circumcision practices remain a rite of passage in many Nigerian communities, including Akoko South East Local Government, Ondo State. These practices are not only cultural markers of identity and manhood but also carry implications for male reproductive health. While many communities uphold traditional circumcision as a means of instilling cultural values and social responsibilities, concerns have been raised about the health risks associated with non-medical circumcision practices (Afolabi, 2023; Balogun, 2024). Complications such as infections, excessive bleeding, and long-term reproductive issues have been reported in settings where sterile techniques and modern medical supervision are lacking (Ibrahim, 2025). Recent research calls for a critical examination of these practices to understand their impact on male reproductive health and to explore ways of integrating modern medical protocols with traditional rites to ensure safety and efficacy (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
In Akoko South East, traditional circumcision practices are linked to adverse male reproductive health outcomes, including infections and complications due to non-standardized procedures. The lack of formal medical oversight increases health risks and hinders early intervention. This poses a significant public health challenge that necessitates examining traditional practices in the context of modern healthcare (Adebanjo, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To document traditional circumcision practices in Akoko South East.
To assess the impact of these practices on male reproductive health.
To recommend strategies for integrating modern medical standards with traditional practices.
Research questions:
What traditional circumcision practices are observed in Akoko South East?
How do these practices affect male reproductive health outcomes?
What measures can improve the safety of traditional circumcision?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional circumcision practices are associated with a higher incidence of reproductive health complications.
The absence of medical oversight correlates with increased health risks.
Integration of modern techniques can reduce adverse outcomes.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides a critical appraisal of traditional circumcision practices and their health implications, offering recommendations that bridge cultural heritage with modern healthcare to enhance male reproductive health (Akinyele, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to evaluating traditional circumcision practices and their impact on male reproductive health in Akoko South East Local Government, focusing on local cultural practices and health outcomes.
Definitions of terms:
Traditional circumcision: The cultural practice of removing the foreskin, performed outside formal medical settings.
Male reproductive health: The state of physical and psychological well-being related to the male reproductive system.
Complications: Adverse outcomes or medical problems resulting from a procedure.
