Background of the study:
Family planning is a critical component of public health that directly impacts maternal and child well-being. In Umuahia North Local Government, Abia State, the uptake of family planning methods is significantly influenced by socio-cultural barriers. Traditional beliefs, religious doctrines, and societal expectations often discourage the adoption of modern contraceptive methods (Nwankwo, 2023; Okoro, 2024). Misinformation and cultural taboos surrounding reproductive health contribute to low family planning rates and high fertility levels, posing challenges to sustainable population growth and economic development. Recent studies indicate that these socio-cultural barriers lead to a gap between the availability of modern family planning services and their actual utilization by community members (Chukwu, 2025). This study seeks to evaluate these barriers comprehensively and to propose culturally sensitive interventions that can improve the uptake of family planning methods.
Statement of the problem:
In Umuahia North, entrenched socio-cultural beliefs and misconceptions about family planning hinder the acceptance and use of modern contraceptives. These barriers lead to unintended pregnancies, strain on resources, and adverse maternal health outcomes. The disconnect between available family planning services and community acceptance necessitates an investigation into the underlying cultural and social factors that restrict uptake (Ike, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To identify socio-cultural barriers affecting family planning uptake.
To assess the impact of these barriers on reproductive health outcomes.
To develop culturally sensitive strategies to promote family planning.
Research questions:
What are the predominant socio-cultural barriers to family planning in Umuahia North?
How do these barriers affect the use of modern contraceptive methods?
What interventions can effectively mitigate these barriers?
Research Hypotheses:
Socio-cultural barriers significantly reduce family planning uptake.
Misconceptions about family planning correlate with adverse reproductive outcomes.
Culturally tailored interventions can improve the acceptance of modern contraceptives.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it addresses the socio-cultural factors hindering family planning, offering insights for developing interventions that respect cultural values while promoting reproductive health. It is expected to inform policymakers and healthcare providers in Umuahia North (Uche, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to assessing socio-cultural barriers to family planning uptake in Umuahia North Local Government, focusing solely on local cultural influences and reproductive health practices.
Definitions of terms:
Family planning: The practice of controlling the number and spacing of children through contraception.
Socio-cultural barriers: Social and cultural factors that hinder behavior change or adoption of new practices.
Contraceptive methods: Techniques or devices used to prevent pregnancy.
