Background of the study:
Local perceptions of epilepsy in Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Ogun State, are deeply rooted in cultural beliefs and societal attitudes. Epilepsy, often misinterpreted as a spiritual or supernatural phenomenon, has led to stigmatization and misconceptions regarding its etiology and treatment (Ajayi, 2023; Balogun, 2024). Traditional explanations for epileptic seizures may attribute the condition to curses, witchcraft, or ancestral displeasure, influencing the type of treatment sought by affected individuals and their families. Consequently, reliance on spiritual or herbal remedies persists, sometimes at the expense of accessing evidence-based medical care (Ogunleye, 2025). The resulting delay or avoidance of proper treatment further compounds health complications and social isolation among patients. Recent studies have emphasized the need to bridge cultural beliefs with biomedical understanding to promote better health outcomes (Nwankwo, 2023). This study aims to examine these local perceptions and their effects on treatment practices, providing insights into how cultural frameworks can be reconciled with modern therapeutic interventions.

Statement of the problem:
In Ijebu-Ode, widespread misconceptions about epilepsy contribute to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Many community members adhere to culturally constructed narratives that stigmatize individuals with epilepsy, leading to social exclusion and reliance on non-conventional treatment methods. This stigmatization hampers the timely utilization of biomedical services, thereby exacerbating health outcomes for patients (Uche, 2024). Limited community education on epilepsy further deepens the divide between traditional beliefs and medical science (Eke, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To investigate local perceptions of epilepsy in Ijebu-Ode.

  2. To assess the impact of these perceptions on treatment choices.

  3. To recommend strategies for integrating biomedical and traditional perspectives in epilepsy care.

Research questions:

  1. What are the predominant cultural beliefs about epilepsy in Ijebu-Ode?

  2. How do these beliefs affect the treatment-seeking behavior of patients?

  3. What interventions can improve the integration of conventional and traditional treatment methods?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Misconceptions about epilepsy significantly delay biomedical treatment.

  2. Cultural stigma adversely affects the quality of life of epilepsy patients.

  3. Educational interventions can effectively bridge the gap between traditional and modern treatment approaches.

Significance of the study:
This research is significant as it seeks to demystify epilepsy by addressing cultural stigmas and misconceptions. It provides evidence-based recommendations for integrating local beliefs with modern treatment protocols, thereby improving patient outcomes and community awareness (Okafor, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to exploring local perceptions and treatment practices related to epilepsy in Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Ogun State, focusing on cultural influences and available health services.

Definitions of terms:

  • Epilepsy: A neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures.

  • Stigmatization: The process of assigning negative attributes to individuals based on perceived differences.

  • Biomedical treatment: Medical care based on scientific research and clinical evidence.
