Background of the Study:
Colonialism profoundly reshaped indigenous governance structures in Bonny Local Government, leaving lasting legacies that continue to influence contemporary political organization. Traditional governance, once characterized by communal decision-making and the authority of elders, was systematically undermined by colonial administrations that imposed centralized and bureaucratic systems (Daramola, 2023). The colonial experience disrupted established power relations, often marginalizing indigenous institutions and reconfiguring local authority (Ibrahim, 2024). As a result, many traditional practices were either abolished or assimilated into the new governance framework, leading to an ongoing tension between indigenous legitimacy and imposed modernity (Emeka, 2025). This study explores the multifaceted effects of colonialism on indigenous governance, examining both the erosion of traditional power structures and the adaptive strategies that communities have developed in response. By analyzing historical documents and contemporary governance practices, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how colonial legacies continue to shape local political life (Daramola, 2023).

Statement of the Problem:
Colonialism has significantly altered indigenous governance in Bonny, resulting in the marginalization of traditional authority and the erosion of community-based decision-making. This historical disruption has created enduring challenges for the restoration and adaptation of indigenous governance structures (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze the impact of colonialism on indigenous governance.

  2. To evaluate the long-term effects on community political structures.

  3. To recommend strategies for revitalizing traditional governance systems.

Research Questions:

  1. How did colonialism affect indigenous governance in Bonny?

  2. What are the long-term impacts of these changes on local political structures?

  3. How can indigenous governance be revitalized in the post-colonial era?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Colonialism significantly disrupted traditional governance systems.

  2. The legacy of colonial rule continues to affect local political dynamics.

  3. Community-led revitalization initiatives can restore indigenous governance.

Significance of the Study:
This study sheds light on the persistent effects of colonialism on local governance, providing critical insights for policymakers and community leaders interested in restoring traditional decision-making processes (Emeka, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the investigation of the effects of colonialism on indigenous governance structures in Bonny Local Government, Rivers State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Colonialism: The practice of dominating a region and its people through foreign rule.

  2. Indigenous Governance: Traditional political systems based on local customs and community participation.

  3. Legacy: Lasting effects resulting from historical events.
