Background of the Study:
Ancestral worship has long been a central element of religious practices in Orlu Local Government, symbolizing the deep connection between the living and their forebears. This traditional form of veneration, which involves rituals, offerings, and ceremonies, continues to influence contemporary religious practices despite the growing prevalence of modern religious ideologies (Uche, 2023). Ancestral worship serves as a cultural anchor, providing spiritual guidance and reinforcing community identity through the remembrance of forefathers (Ike, 2024). Recent research indicates that while some communities have embraced new religious doctrines, many still incorporate ancestral rituals into their worship, thereby preserving indigenous beliefs and values (Chima, 2025). This study examines the interplay between ancestral worship and contemporary religious practices, assessing how these dual influences shape community spirituality and identity. It further explores the potential conflicts and synergies that arise from the coexistence of traditional and modern religious paradigms (Uche, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Contemporary religious practices in Orlu are experiencing tension between modern doctrines and traditional ancestral worship. This conflict may lead to a dilution of cultural identity and spiritual disorientation, raising concerns about the sustainability of indigenous religious practices (Ike, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To investigate the role of ancestral worship in current religious practices.
To evaluate the impact of modern religious influences on traditional rituals.
To propose ways to harmonize ancestral worship with contemporary practices.
Research Questions:
How is ancestral worship integrated into modern religious practices?
What are the impacts of modern religious doctrines on traditional worship?
What strategies can balance ancestral traditions with contemporary spirituality?
Research Hypotheses:
Ancestral worship significantly influences contemporary religious practices.
Modern religious influences often conflict with traditional worship rituals.
Integrated religious practices can strengthen community spiritual identity.
Significance of the Study:
The study underscores the importance of ancestral worship in maintaining cultural and spiritual continuity. It provides valuable insights for religious leaders and cultural policymakers seeking to balance tradition with modernity (Chima, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the examination of the role of ancestral worship in contemporary religious practices in Orlu Local Government, Imo State.
Definitions of Terms:
Ancestral Worship: Traditional veneration of deceased forebears.
Contemporary Religious Practices: Modern forms of worship and spiritual activities.
