Background of the Study:
Acculturation, the process by which individuals and communities adapt to cultural changes, has significantly affected traditional naming ceremonies in Umuahia North Local Government. Historically, these ceremonies served as pivotal rites of passage, reinforcing communal identity and cultural continuity through ritualistic practices and symbolic naming conventions (Nwankwo, 2023). With increasing exposure to global cultures and modern lifestyles, many traditional naming practices are undergoing transformation. This shift has introduced new elements, sometimes diluting the original cultural significance attached to these ceremonies (Chukwu, 2024). Modern influences, including mass media and urban migration, have contributed to a reconfiguration of traditional norms, leading to a hybridization of customs (Eze, 2025). This study examines how acculturation has reshaped the conduct, symbolism, and communal participation in traditional naming ceremonies. It further explores the implications of these changes on cultural identity, community cohesion, and intergenerational transmission of values (Nwankwo, 2023). By critically analyzing current practices, the research aims to offer insights into maintaining cultural integrity amid rapid social change.

Statement of the Problem:
Traditional naming ceremonies in Umuahia North are increasingly influenced by acculturation, resulting in altered ritual practices and diminished cultural significance. The fusion of modern elements with indigenous customs has led to conflicts over cultural preservation and identity (Chukwu, 2024). This phenomenon raises concerns about the future of cultural traditions and the integrity of naming practices (Eze, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the effects of acculturation on traditional naming ceremonies.

  2. To evaluate the cultural implications of modern influences on indigenous practices.

  3. To propose strategies for preserving the cultural integrity of naming ceremonies.

Research Questions:

  1. How has acculturation influenced traditional naming ceremonies?

  2. What are the perceived impacts of modern influences on these ceremonies?

  3. How can traditional practices be preserved amid acculturative pressures?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Acculturation negatively alters the traditional elements of naming ceremonies.

  2. Modern influences dilute the cultural significance of indigenous naming rituals.

  3. Cultural preservation programs can mitigate the effects of acculturation.

Significance of the Study:
This study provides critical insights into the balance between modernity and tradition in cultural ceremonies. It informs community leaders and policymakers on strategies to preserve indigenous practices while adapting to contemporary influences (Nwankwo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the effect of acculturation on traditional naming ceremonies in Umuahia North Local Government, Abia State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Acculturation: The process of cultural change resulting from the contact between different cultures.

  2. Naming Ceremony: A ritual practice involving the formal naming of a child.

  3. Cultural Integrity: The preservation of traditional values and practices within a community.
