Background of the Study:
Indigenous architecture in Abak Local Government is a testament to the adaptive and resourceful nature of traditional building techniques that have evolved over centuries. These construction practices are inherently sustainable, utilizing locally sourced materials and environmentally friendly methods that minimize ecological footprints (Udo, 2023). Indigenous structures often embody a deep understanding of climatic conditions and geographical peculiarities, contributing to energy efficiency and longevity (Okafor, 2024). In an era dominated by rapid urbanization and environmental degradation, there is renewed interest in revisiting these traditional techniques as a model for sustainable housing (Ekwueme, 2025). The study investigates how indigenous architectural practices not only provide shelter but also promote environmental sustainability by integrating natural ventilation, thermal insulation, and local aesthetics. A comprehensive analysis of these practices could offer alternative solutions to modern construction challenges while preserving cultural heritage (Udo, 2023). The research also considers the socio-cultural implications of indigenous designs and their potential to foster community resilience and ecological balance.

Statement of the Problem:
Modern housing developments in Abak have largely overlooked indigenous architectural methods, favoring cost-effective but environmentally taxing practices. This neglect has led to increased energy consumption and environmental degradation (Okafor, 2024). The challenge lies in bridging traditional sustainable methods with modern construction technologies to address current housing challenges while preserving cultural integrity (Ekwueme, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the sustainable features of indigenous architecture in Abak.

  2. To compare the environmental impacts of traditional versus modern housing designs.

  3. To recommend integrative approaches that combine indigenous techniques with modern practices.

Research Questions:

  1. How does indigenous architecture contribute to housing sustainability?

  2. What are the environmental benefits of traditional building methods compared to modern techniques?

  3. How can indigenous practices be integrated into contemporary housing design?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Indigenous architecture significantly reduces environmental impact compared to modern methods.

  2. Traditional building techniques offer superior thermal efficiency.

  3. Integrative design strategies can enhance overall housing sustainability.

Significance of the Study:
This study underscores the environmental and cultural benefits of indigenous architecture, advocating for sustainable housing solutions that integrate traditional wisdom with modern technology. It provides a basis for policy recommendations and community-driven initiatives (Udo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the impact of indigenous architecture on housing sustainability in Abak Local Government, Akwa Ibom State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Indigenous Architecture: Traditional construction practices based on local materials and methods.

  2. Housing Sustainability: The ability to maintain environmentally friendly and resource-efficient living spaces.

  3. Ecological Balance: The equilibrium between human activities and natural environmental processes.
